Waaree Energies Ignites India’s BESS Revolution with 5.15 GWh Automated Facility, Eyes 20 GWh Roadmap
Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (Waaree ESS), a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Limited, has commissioned its advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Container Manufacturing Facility, marking a significant milestone in India’s growing energy storage industry.
The newly operational automated facility has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5.15 GWh, upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh, and represents the first phase of Waaree’s ambitious plan to build a 20 GWh integrated energy storage manufacturing ecosystem in India.
Advanced Automated Manufacturing Facility
The new BESS manufacturing plant incorporates advanced Industry 4.0 technologies, enabling highly automated and efficient production.
Key features of the facility include:
- Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)
- Intelligent material handling systems
- Automated assembly lines
- Advanced quality assurance and testing systems
The facility is designed to manufacture battery energy storage containers for utility-scale, commercial, and industrial applications, supporting India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector.
Expansion Plans for FY27
Waaree ESS plans to further expand its manufacturing capabilities during the current financial year with the commissioning of:
- 5.15 GWh Battery Pack Manufacturing Facility (upgraded from the earlier planned 3.5 GWh)
- 3.5 GWh Lithium Cell Manufacturing Facility
These additions will strengthen the company’s integrated manufacturing capabilities across the battery value chain.
Supporting India’s Energy Transition
Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming increasingly important as India accelerates the deployment of renewable energy.
BESS solutions help:
- Improve grid stability.
- Store excess solar and wind energy.
- Supply electricity during peak demand.
- Reduce renewable energy curtailment.
- Lower dependence on conventional power generation.
The expansion also supports the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by increasing domestic manufacturing of advanced energy storage technologies.
Building a 20 GWh Manufacturing Ecosystem
The commissioning of the 5.15 GWh facility marks the beginning of Waaree’s long-term strategy to establish a 20 GWh energy storage manufacturing platform.
The integrated ecosystem is expected to include battery cells, battery packs, and complete BESS container solutions, enabling the company to serve utility, commercial, and industrial customers while reducing India’s reliance on imported storage technologies.
Management Commentary
Commenting on the development, Sunil Rathi, Director, Waaree, said that domestically manufactured energy storage solutions will play a crucial role in strengthening India’s energy security, improving grid stability, and supporting the country’s clean energy transition.
He reiterated Waaree ESS’s commitment to delivering high-quality, Made-in-India battery storage solutions that contribute to India’s emergence as a global clean energy manufacturing hub.
