Bharat Forge Partners with FLYING WHALES to Develop Heavy-Lift Airships in India
Bharat Forge Limited has taken a major step toward strengthening India’s aerospace and defence capabilities by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FLYING WHALES, a French-Canadian company specializing in heavy-lift airship technology. Announced on July 22, 2026, the partnership aims to jointly develop, manufacture, and deploy advanced heavy-lift airships in India for defence, strategic logistics, and national security applications.
The collaboration aligns closely with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by promoting indigenous aerospace manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported strategic platforms.
Strategic Partnership to Build Heavy-Lift Airships in India
Under the agreement, Bharat Forge and FLYING WHALES will work together to establish indigenous capabilities for the design, integration, manufacturing, and deployment of heavy-lift airships.
The partnership seeks to create a domestic ecosystem for advanced aerospace manufacturing while supporting India’s long-term defence modernization goals.
The initiative is expected to position India among the select countries with the capability to manufacture and operate next-generation heavy-lift airships.
LCA60T: Next-Generation Heavy-Lift Airship
The collaboration will focus on the LCA60T, FLYING WHALES’ next-generation heavy-lift airship platform.
Key features of the LCA60T include:
- Cargo capacity of up to 60 tonnes
- Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capability
- Minimal ground infrastructure requirements
- Hybrid-electric propulsion system
- Ability to operate in remote and inaccessible regions
Unlike conventional cargo aircraft, the LCA60T can transport oversized equipment directly to locations where runways or developed infrastructure are unavailable, making it particularly valuable for strategic and humanitarian missions.

The heavy-lift airships are expected to support several critical missions across defence and civilian sectors, including:
- Logistics support for forward military bases
- Transportation of heavy machinery and oversized defence equipment
