Dalmia Bharat Sugar Fuels Global Expansion with US$132M Tanzania Integrated Bio-Energy & Sugar Venture

Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Limited (DBSIL) has approved a major overseas investment of US$132 million to develop an integrated sugar manufacturing project in Tanzania, marking a significant step in its international expansion strategy. The project is aimed at strengthening the company’s presence in East Africa while creating a scalable platform for sugar production and renewable bio-energy.

The investment was approved by the company’s Board of Directors and will be executed through Eagle Agrotech Tanzania Limited (EATL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Eagle Agrotech Holdings Limited (EAHL). EAHL is 51% owned by Dalmia Bharat Sugar, while the remaining 49% stake is held by Symphony Global LLC, the investment vehicle of Mohamed Ali Rashed Alabbar, Founder and Chairman of Emaar Properties.

Integrated Sugar Complex Planned in Tanzania

The project will establish a large integrated sugar estate and processing facility designed to address the structural sugar supply deficit in Tanzania and neighboring East African countries.

The integrated development will include sugarcane cultivation, sugar manufacturing, and renewable power generation, creating a self-sustaining production ecosystem.

Planned Project Capacity

  • Integrated Sugar Estate: 10,000 hectares with expansion potential to 20,000 hectares
  • Sugar Production Capacity: Approximately 70,000 metric tonnes (MT) per annum, scalable to 150,000 MT per annum
  • Cogeneration Power Plant: 20 MW, expandable to 40 MW, utilizing sugar manufacturing by-products for electricity generation

The captive sugarcane plantation is expected to ensure a stable raw material supply while improving operational efficiency and reducing dependence on third-party sourcing.

Strategic Expansion into East Africa

The investment provides Dalmia Bharat Sugar with access to one of Africa’s growing agricultural and consumer markets. Tanzania continues to face a domestic sugar supply deficit, creating opportunities for local production and import substitution.

In addition to serving the Tanzanian market, the project is expected to supply neighboring East African countries, enhancing the company’s regional footprint and export opportunities.

Focus on Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Beyond sugar production, the project aligns with Dalmia Bharat Sugar’s long-term strategy of developing an integrated bio-energy business.

The cogeneration facility will utilize bagasse and other sugar by-products to generate renewable electricity, supporting sustainable operations while creating an additional revenue stream.

The company also plans to maximize the commercial utilization of agricultural by-products through environmentally sustainable initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to circular economy principles and green energy.

Long-Term Growth Opportunity

The Tanzania project represents one of Dalmia Bharat Sugar’s largest international investments and reflects its strategy of diversifying beyond the domestic market.

By combining large-scale agriculture, sugar manufacturing, and renewable energy generation, the company aims to create a scalable, integrated business model capable of delivering long-term growth and operational resilience.

With rising demand for sugar and increasing focus on clean energy across emerging markets, the project is expected to strengthen Dalmia Bharat Sugar’s global presence while supporting sustainable value creation.
