JSW Steel and Posco have signed an agreement to create a 50:50 joint venture to establish a steel plant in India with an initial production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). This partnership aims to integrate both companies’ strengths in steel production and collaborate on additional projects related to battery materials and renewable energy in India. Renewable energy generated through this collaboration will power the new steel plant.

Jayant Acharya, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Steel, expressed optimism that this joint venture will combine the expertise of two prominent steel producers.

Joint Venture Ownership and Renewable Energy Plans

Under the joint venture, JSW Steel and Posco will each hold a 50% stake in the project, ensuring equal ownership. The steel plant’s planned capacity will initially be 5 mtpa, and renewable energy resources will be deployed to meet the plant’s energy needs. However, specific details regarding the type and scale of renewable energy sources have not been disclosed, nor have any further plans for energy use beyond the plant’s captive requirements.
