Sun Pharma Secures South African Approval for Generic Semaglutide Injection

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited has achieved a significant regulatory milestone by receiving approval to manufacture and market its generic semaglutide injection in South Africa. The approval strengthens the company’s global generics portfolio while expanding access to an important treatment for patients living with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The approval, granted by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), allows Sun Pharma to introduce its generic version of semaglutide in the South African market. Following India, South Africa becomes the second country where the company will commercialize this complex generic medicine for adults whose Type 2 diabetes remains inadequately controlled.

Expanding Access to Diabetes Care

South Africa continues to witness a steady rise in Type 2 diabetes cases, fueled by urbanization, changing lifestyles, and increasing obesity rates. The growing burden of diabetes has intensified the need for affordable and effective treatment options.

With this regulatory clearance, Sun Pharma aims to improve patient access to evidence-based therapy while supporting healthcare professionals in managing one of the country’s fastest-growing chronic diseases.

Product Details

Sun Pharma’s approved generic semaglutide injection will be available as:

  • Dosage form: Pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen
  • Administration: Once-weekly injection
  • Available strengths:
    • 2 mg/1.5 mL
    • 4 mg/3 mL

The once-weekly dosing schedule is expected to enhance treatment adherence and improve convenience for patients managing Type 2 diabetes.

Management Commentary

Commenting on the achievement, Aalok Shanghvi, Chief Operating Officer of Sun Pharma, said the approval demonstrates the company’s capability to develop complex generic medicines that meet stringent regulatory and quality standards across global markets.

He added that Sun Pharma remains focused on expanding access to high-quality generic medicines and providing healthcare professionals and patients with reliable, evidence-based treatment options.
