RBI Introduces New Deposit Interest Rate Rules Effective October 1, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a comprehensive set of Second Amendment Directions, 2026, aimed at making deposit interest rates more transparent and consistent across the banking system. The revised regulations, announced on July 30, 2026, will come into force from October 1, 2026 and apply to multiple categories of banks operating in India.

The amendments are designed to improve transparency in the way banks disclose deposit interest rates, provide greater operational flexibility for pricing bulk deposits, and ensure customers receive fair and uniform treatment regardless of where they bank.

Faster and More Transparent Disclosure of Bulk Deposit Rates

A major highlight of the new directions is the introduction of a standardized daily disclosure schedule for bulk deposit interest rates.

Commercial Banks, Small Finance Banks, Regional Rural Banks, Local Area Banks, and Urban Co-operative Banks will now be required to publish their applicable bulk deposit interest rates on their official websites every business day at 10:00 AM. The RBI has allowed a brief 10-minute window, meaning the latest rates must be available to customers by 10:10 AM.

This change is intended to improve transparency and enable depositors, businesses, and institutional investors to access the latest deposit rates at a predictable time each day.

For Payment Banks, the RBI has clarified that deposit interest rates must strictly follow the schedule disclosed in advance on their respective websites.

Uniform Interest Rates Across All Branches

The RBI has also reinforced the principle of fairness in deposit pricing.

Under the revised rules, banks must maintain uniform interest rates across all branches for deposits of the same category and amount accepted on the same day. Customers should not receive different interest rates simply because they visit a different branch or location.

This measure is expected to improve consistency across the banking network and ensure equal treatment for all depositors.

Greater Flexibility for Bulk Deposit Pricing

Another significant reform allows Commercial Banks and Small Finance Banks to offer differential interest rates on bulk deposits based on the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) framework.

Banks can now price eligible bulk deposits by considering the differential run-off rates specified under the RBI’s Asset Liability Management (ALM) Directions. This flexibility applies to both domestic rupee deposits and rupee deposits held by non-residents.

The move gives banks additional freedom to manage liquidity more efficiently while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.

Banks Covered Under the New Rules

The amended deposit interest rate directions apply to the following categories of regulated entities:

  • Commercial Banks
  • Small Finance Banks (SFBs)
  • Regional Rural Banks (RRBs)
  • Payment Banks
  • Local Area Banks (LABs)
  • Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs)

Each category has received its own amendment notification, but the overall objective remains the same—bringing greater transparency, consistency, and efficiency to deposit interest rate practices.

What This Means for Depositors

For customers, the changes should make it easier to compare deposit interest rates across banks, as institutions will now follow a standardized disclosure process. Uniform pricing across branches also helps ensure fairness, reducing the possibility of inconsistent rates for similar deposits.

Businesses and institutional depositors that invest in bulk deposits will also benefit from timely publication of updated interest rates, allowing them to make more informed investment decisions.

Impact on Banks

Banks will need to update their internal systems and websites to comply with the new disclosure timelines before the rules become effective on October 1, 2026.

While the regulations introduce stricter disclosure requirements, they also provide greater flexibility in pricing bulk deposits under the Liquidity Coverage Ratio framework. This balanced approach is expected to help banks manage liquidity more effectively while improving transparency for customers.
