Stock Market Today 27 August 2026: Nifty, Sensex End Lower as HDFC Bank Drags Market on August 27, 2026
The overall market is weak and volatile today. The Nifty 50 has slipped below the important 24,100 level, while Bank Nifty is also trading under pressure. The biggest drag on the benchmark is HDFC Bank, which has fallen sharply amid legal and leadership-related concerns.
Nifty 50
Nifty is currently around 24,090, down about 0.48%, after trading in a volatile range. The immediate technical picture remains cautious. Earlier technical analysis identified 24,150 as an important support, followed by 24,000, while 24,400 remains an important resistance for any meaningful recovery.
Bank Nifty
Bank Nifty is also weak, trading around 57,600, with the index down roughly 0.2–0.35% during the session. Its intraday range has been approximately 57,535–58,012.
The banking index is being affected particularly by weakness in HDFC Bank, which has fallen to around a two-and-a-half-year low. HDFC Bank is under pressure because of reports concerning a proposed US class-action lawsuit and uncertainty surrounding CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan’s tenure.
Why is the market weak today?
1. HDFC Bank pressure: This is probably the biggest index-level concern today because of HDFC Bank’s large Nifty weight.
2. Broad-based selling: Weakness has spread beyond banking into metals, auto, FMCG and oil & gas stocks.
3. Geopolitical uncertainty: Investors remain cautious because of geopolitical developments, although softer crude prices are providing some support.
4. Expiry-related volatility: Today’s trading has also been unusually volatile because of the derivatives expiry. Reports noted an exceptionally sharp late-session move in the Sensex and Nifty.
Overall Market View
I would classify today’s market as “weak with high volatility” rather than a major breakdown.
Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation — +11.63%
The major trigger for BBTC is a favourable Supreme Court development.
The Supreme Court recalled its earlier observation concerning a potential ₹4,655.24 crore lease-rent liability related to the company’s erstwhile Singampatti tea estate. The company had argued that the amount had neither been formally demanded nor finally determined. The court subsequently recalled the observation.
ICICI Prudential AMC — down 4.03%
The reason for the decline in ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company (NSE: ICICIAMC) is much clearer.
Prudential Corporation Holdings, a promoter of ICICI Prudential AMC, sold up to a 2% stake in the company through an open-market transaction on August 27. The proposed sale involved approximately 98.85 lakh shares.
Overall Market View
I would classify today’s market as “weak with high volatility” rather than a major breakdown.
Nifty: Bearish below 24,150, but 24,000 is crucial support.
Bank Nifty: Range-bound to weak below 58,000.
Market breadth: Selling is relatively broad, so traders should be selective.
Positive areas: Selective pharma, consumer durables, and individual stock-specific stories are providing opportunities.
