Indian Stock Market Today: 28 August 2026

Today’s session was positive overall, with Indian equities recovering from Thursday’s sharp expiry-day sell-off. IT stocks led the rebound, while Bank Nifty remained relatively weak.

  • Nifty 50: around 24,175, up about 0.35%
  • Sensex: around 77,264.5, up about 0.41%
  • Bank Nifty: around 57,496.30, roughly flat to slightly negative
  • Nifty IT: strongest sector, up roughly 3%+

What drove the market?

1. IT stocks led the recovery
IT was the standout sector. Strong performance from US technology stocks, particularly following Nvidia-related optimism, helped Indian IT shares. The IT index gained around 3%, with all its constituents advancing.

2. Recovery after Thursday’s expiry shock
Thursday’s market saw extraordinary volatility during the closing auction, with the Sensex briefly falling more than 2,000 points in minutes. Today’s rebound suggests investors were willing to buy after that sharp decline.

3. Bank Nifty was not participating strongly
Bank Nifty was around 57,400–57,500, compared with Thursday’s close near 57,496.30, indicating that banking stocks were much less enthusiastic than IT.

4. Global/Fed event remains important
Investors are cautious ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at Jackson Hole, which could provide clues about US interest-rate policy.

My market read

Short term: 🟡 Neutral to mildly bullish

The rebound is encouraging, but I would not call it a confirmed trend reversal yet. Nifty needs to sustain above the 24,200–24,300 zone and subsequently break higher for stronger bullish confirmation. The market is still sensitive to global cues and FII flows.

For your trading setup, I’d watch:

NIFTY: 24,000–24,100 support | 24,200–24,300 resistance
BANK NIFTY: 57,250–57,300 support | 57,600–57,800 resistance

Today was a relief rally led by IT, rather than a broad-based aggressive bullish move. Bank Nifty’s lack of participation is something to watch next week.

Top Stock :

Here are the most important stock-specific developments I would track today:

1. Tejas Networks — Major order win

Tejas Networks jumped sharply after receiving a key order from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The stock gained around 9% during today’s session. Check here for more info

Why it matters: Positive for Tejas Networks because the order strengthens its telecom technology/order-book visibility.

2. Ather Energy — Hero increases stake

Ather Energy gained around 4.5% after Hero MotoCorp increased its stake to approximately 32.8%, involving an investment of about $184 million.

Check here for more info

Why it matters: The increased strategic ownership is positive for Ather’s funding position and long-term EV expansion.

3. IT Stocks Rally as Nvidia Boosts AI Optimism

Indian IT stocks witnessed a strong rally on Friday, August 28, with the Nifty IT index gaining around 3%, as investor sentiment improved following strong results and an upbeat revenue outlook from US chipmaker Nvidia. Major IT stocks including TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, LTIMindtree and Coforge advanced, with several stocks gaining between 2% and 5% during the session. The positive global technology sentiment revived expectations around continued spending on artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital transformation, providing support to Indian IT companies that derive a significant portion of their revenues from overseas markets. The IT sector’s strength was a key factor behind the broader recovery in Indian equities after two consecutive sessions of losses.

US Market – Important Event Today, August 28, 2026

The key U.S. event today is Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET. Investors are closely watching his comments for clues on the Fed’s interest-rate path, particularly after U.S. PCE inflation remained elevated at 3.7% year-on-year in July. The speech could influence U.S. Treasury yields, the dollar, Wall Street sentiment and expectations for the Fed’s September policy decision. Alongside the speech, markets will also track the final August University of Michigan consumer-sentiment reading, the Chicago PMI and preliminary payroll revisions.
