Stock Market Today: (31 August 2026) Nifty Ends Lower as Crude Oil Surges on Renewed US-Iran Tensions; Banks and Pharma Outperform

Indian equity markets ended lower on Monday, August 31, as renewed US-Iran tensions pushed crude oil prices higher and increased concerns over inflation and global interest rates. The Nifty 50 declined 95.25 points, or 0.39%, to close at 24,080.40, while the Sensex fell 307.23 points, or 0.40%, to 76,957.27. In contrast, the Bank Nifty gained 0.92% to close at 58,024.95, showing relative strength in the banking sector.

Stocks That Gained Today

Among the major gainers in the user’s watchlist, Sun Pharma led with a 3.38% rise, supported by strength in the pharmaceutical sector as investors rotated toward relatively defensive businesses amid broader market uncertainty. Nestle India gained 2.88%, while Axis Bank advanced 2.77%, reflecting the strong performance of private-sector banks and their contribution to the Bank Nifty’s gain. Max Healthcare rose 2.76%, with the healthcare sector remaining one of the stronger pockets of the market. Grasim Industries gained 2.46%, outperforming the broader market. Healthcare, IT and banking stocks were among the relatively stronger sectors during Monday’s session.

Stocks That Fell Today

The biggest pressure came from Adani group stocks. Adani Energy Solutions fell 10.37%, Adani Enterprises declined 9.76% and Adani Ports dropped 6.70%. The sharp moves came amid broader volatility in Adani stocks and heavy trading activity, with the day’s market also affected by the MSCI index rebalancing and the new closing-auction mechanism, which generated unusually large flows and stock-specific volatility. Bharti Airtel declined 3.75% amid weakness in the broader market and telecom-related selling pressure.

Augmont Enterprises fell after making a strong stock-market debut. The company listed at ₹960, around a 22% premium to its ₹788 issue price, but subsequently faced profit booking as investors locked in gains after the strong opening.

BSE Ltd also declined 3.61%, adding to the weakness among market-related stocks as investors remained cautious amid elevated volatility and heavy index-rebalancing activity.

India GDP Growth Beats Expectations

One of the biggest positive developments for the Indian economy came from the release of Q1 FY27 GDP data. India’s real GDP grew 7.8% year-on-year in the April-June quarter, comfortably beating market expectations. The strong growth highlights the resilience of the Indian economy despite global geopolitical and commodity-market challenges.

The GDP numbers provide a positive fundamental backdrop for Indian equities, particularly domestic-facing sectors such as banking, infrastructure, capital goods and consumption. However, investors will continue to monitor whether elevated crude prices and geopolitical risks could affect growth and inflation in coming quarters.

Global Tensions and Crude Oil Remain Key Risks

The major external concern for Indian markets was the renewed escalation between the United States and Iran. US forces reportedly struck Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran reportedly retaliated by attacking US bases in Jordan. The developments raised concerns about disruption to energy supplies through one of the world’s most important oil routes.

Crude oil prices reacted sharply. Brent crude moved above $90 a barrel, with prices rising more than 3% during the session as investors assessed the potential impact of the renewed conflict on Middle East oil supplies. Higher crude is particularly important for India because the country is a major importer of crude oil, meaning a sustained rise in energy prices could increase inflationary pressure and affect corporate margins.

US Interest Rates Add to Market Concerns

Investors are also watching the US interest-rate outlook closely. Rising US bond yields and expectations that interest rates could remain higher for longer are creating additional pressure on emerging-market equities. Higher US yields can make dollar assets relatively more attractive and potentially reduce foreign flows into markets such as India.

MSCI Rebalancing Creates Stock-Specific Volatility

Monday’s session was also unusual because of the MSCI index rebalancing, which resulted in significant trading flows near the market close. Reuters reported that around $4.1 billion of trades took place during the NSE closing-auction window, nearly 40 times the average turnover since the new auction mechanism was introduced. The rebalancing affected individual stocks differently, creating sharp movements that were not necessarily reflective of underlying business fundamentals.

Market Outlook

The Indian market therefore ended August on a cautious note. While the Nifty closed below 24,100, the resilience of the Bank Nifty, pharma and healthcare sectors provided some support. Investors will continue to track crude oil prices, the US-Iran situation, US bond yields, foreign institutional flows and global risk sentiment.

For the near term, any further escalation in the Middle East could keep crude oil elevated and increase volatility in Indian equities. Conversely, signs of de-escalation and stabilisation in oil prices could improve risk appetite. Traders should therefore expect continued stock-specific volatility while the market assesses these global and domestic signals.
