TCS Selected by METRO AG for AI-Led Global IT Transformation

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been selected as a strategic technology partner by METRO AG, an international food wholesaler, for a multi-country IT transformation aimed at simplifying its technology environment and supporting scalable growth.

The announcement was made by TCS on September 3, 2026.

TCS to Transform METRO’s IT Application Landscape

Under the engagement, TCS will help METRO transition from its highly localised, country-specific IT application landscape to a more centralised and globally governed technology environment.

The transformation will leverage AI-based solutions to consolidate applications, simplify technology operations and reduce operational complexity across METRO’s major markets in Europe and Asia.

The initiative is expected to provide METRO with a more flexible technology platform that can support its future expansion while allowing the company to allocate resources more efficiently toward customer growth, innovation and value creation.

Multi-Country Transformation Program

METRO has historically operated with significant local autonomy across its international markets. The company is now moving toward a more globally aligned and centrally driven technology model.

TCS will support this transition by working on:

  • Consolidation of applications across key markets
  • Simplification of technology operations
  • AI-based technology solutions
  • Creation of a more centralised IT environment
  • Greater operational consistency and efficiency
  • Change management associated with the transformation
  • Development of a scalable and flexible IT operating model

The engagement therefore extends beyond conventional IT services and includes significant business and organisational change management.

What METRO AG Says

Dr. Khaled Bagban, Chief Information Officer of METRO AG, said the company wants an IT landscape that combines local relevance with stronger central steering.

The objective is to create systems that are scalable across markets, measurable in their business impact and capable of reducing complexity while supporting the company’s wholesale operations.

TCS Strengthens Position in AI-Led Enterprise Transformation

For TCS, the engagement reinforces its positioning as a technology partner for large-scale global transformation programs.

The company highlighted its experience in managing complex, multi-country transformation initiatives and its growing capabilities across the AI technology stack.

TCS said the partnership will help METRO develop a future-ready and efficient IT operating model capable of supporting growth, innovation and changing customer requirements.

TCS has operated in Europe for more than 45 years and has nearly 15,000 employees in the region. In Germany, the company has been present since 1991.

No Deal Value Disclosed

From an investor perspective, an important point is that TCS has not disclosed the financial value or duration of the METRO engagement.

Therefore, the immediate revenue or earnings contribution cannot be quantified based on the announcement.

Nevertheless, the strategic nature and multi-country scope of the program make it relevant for investors monitoring TCS’s large-deal pipeline, AI-led transformation business and European growth.

About METRO AG

METRO is an international food wholesaler serving hotels, restaurants, caterers and independent merchants.

The company operates in more than 30 countries, has approximately 15 million customers and employs more than 84,000 people worldwide.

METRO reported sales of approximately €32.4 billion in FY2024/25.

Investor Takeaway

The TCS-METRO partnership is a positive strategic development for TCS, particularly because it involves a global enterprise, multiple international markets and AI-led technology transformation.

The announcement demonstrates TCS’s focus on helping large enterprises simplify legacy technology environments while adopting more scalable and AI-enabled operating models.

However, investors should avoid assuming a major immediate earnings impact because the contract value has not been disclosed.

The key factors to monitor will be whether TCS expands the METRO relationship into additional markets and services and whether the engagement contributes meaningfully to its future order book and revenue growth.
