Stock market today- 16 September 2026: Nifty, Bank Nifty Rebound After Tuesday Sell-Off; ITC, SBI, HDFC Life Lead Gains

Indian stock market today, September 16, 2026: Indian benchmark indices recovered on Wednesday after Tuesday’s sharp sell-off, with buying emerging in banking, financial services, FMCG and other large-cap stocks. The Nifty 50 closed at 23,217.60, up 99 points or 0.43%, while the Sensex gained 332.85 points, or 0.45%, to 74,336.45. The Nifty Bank also recovered, with market data showing it closing around 56,003, up about 0.37% from the previous session.

Nifty and Bank Nifty Today: Market Recovers From Previous Session’s Fall

The recovery came after the Nifty declined 279.50 points, or 1.19%, on Tuesday, while the Sensex had fallen more than 777 points.

Wednesday’s rebound was supported by value buying in banks and financial stocks, along with gains in FMCG and selected large-cap stocks. The market also benefited from buying after the previous day’s decline, although gains remained limited by high crude oil prices, elevated US Treasury yields and uncertainty ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision.

The Nifty Bank recovered from Tuesday’s 1.43% decline. It opened at 56,007.65 and traded as high as 56,368.70 before closing around 56,003.

Why Were HDFC Life, SBI Life, SBI and ITC Up Today?

Several stocks highlighted earlier in the session continued to attract buying.

HDFC Life

HDFC Life gained around 2.7%, with life-insurance stocks among the stronger performers. The move came amid broader buying in financial stocks and market attention around proposed changes to insurance-sector commission structures.

SBI Life

SBI Life also gained around 2.6%, participating in the broader recovery across life insurers and financial stocks.

SBI

State Bank of India gained around 2%, supported by the recovery in banking stocks. The government’s move to introduce a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate on eligible UPI transactions above ₹2,000 from October 15 also brought banks and payment companies into focus.

ITC

ITC was another important contributor, gaining around 2.3%. The stock benefited from buying in FMCG stocks and reports of cigarette price increases, which investors are assessing for their potential impact on realisations and margins.

Pine Labs Falls Despite UPI Monetisation News

One of the interesting stock-specific moves today was Pine Labs, which declined despite the positive implications of the new UPI merchant-fee framework.

The UPI change is expected to create a new monetisation opportunity for digital-payment companies on eligible transactions. However, investors are also assessing how the eventual revenue-sharing arrangement will affect individual companies.

Pine Labs therefore remained volatile despite the broader recovery in financial and payment-related stocks.

Groww Stock Falls on Block Deal

Groww’s parent, Billionbrains Garage Ventures, was another notable decliner.

The stock fell around 3.9% amid a large block transaction involving roughly 1.69% of the company’s equity, worth approximately ₹1,999 crore. Reports identified Peak XV Partners and Sequoia Capital as likely sellers, although the exchange transaction itself did not immediately establish the identity of both counterparties.

The large transaction created additional supply pressure and resulted in exceptionally high trading volumes.

Molbio Diagnostics: Profit Booking After Sharp Rally

Molbio Diagnostics declined around 2.7% today.

Unlike some of the other stocks, there was no comparable fresh negative business announcement driving the move. The decline came after a very strong post-listing rally, making profit booking and price consolidation an important factor to watch.

The stock had reached a recent high after its strong debut and had subsequently begun correcting.

Glass Wall Systems and Kanohar Electricals Make Strong IPO Debuts

Wednesday also saw the listing of new stocks Glass Wall Systems and Kanohar Electricals.

Glass Wall Systems opened above its ₹182 IPO issue price, while Kanohar Electricals opened above its ₹632 issue price. Both stocks attracted significant trading interest during their first session.

Their strong debuts provided another point of activity in the primary-market segment.

FII Selling Remains a Concern

Despite the recovery in Indian equities, foreign institutional investor flows remained a headwind.

FIIs reportedly sold approximately ₹2,977.86 crore of Indian equities on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors bought around ₹2,686.05 crore. The continued foreign selling means domestic institutional buying remains important in absorbing overseas outflows.

This is an important factor to watch because the Indian market has already been under pressure from higher crude prices, elevated global bond yields and currency weakness.

Crude Oil Remains a Major Risk for Indian Markets

Crude oil remains one of the most important external factors for Indian equities.

Brent crude was trading around $108 a barrel on Wednesday, with Middle East supply disruptions keeping prices elevated. Reports pointed to disruptions involving Saudi oil infrastructure and continuing regional tensions.

For India, sustained high crude prices can increase the country’s import bill and put pressure on inflation, the rupee and corporate margins.

This makes oil particularly important for sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and other fuel-intensive businesses, while oil producers and some upstream companies can respond differently.

US Federal Reserve Decision Is the Biggest Global Event Today

The biggest global market event on September 16 is the US Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision.

The Federal Open Market Committee’s meeting is scheduled for September 15-16, with a new set of economic projections accompanying the meeting.

Markets have been focused not only on the rate decision but also on the Fed’s economic projections and Chair Kevin Warsh’s subsequent comments.

The reason this matters for India is straightforward: US interest rates influence the dollar, US Treasury yields, global liquidity, and emerging-market capital flows.

A more hawkish Fed message could keep global yields and the dollar elevated, while a less restrictive policy signal could ease some pressure on emerging-market assets.

US Markets and Treasury Yields

US stocks ended lower on Tuesday ahead of the Fed decision.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6%, the S&P 500 declined 0.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.8%. Higher oil prices and elevated Treasury yields remained concerns for investors.

The US 10-year Treasury yield remained around the 5% level, making the bond market another important global signal for Indian equities.

Global Markets: Oil, Bonds and Fed in Focus

Global markets were cautious on Wednesday as investors waited for the Fed decision.

Oil prices remained elevated, while bond yields had recently climbed sharply. Reuters reported that global stocks were stabilising somewhat as oil prices and government bond yields paused ahead of the Fed decision.

Asian markets were mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei slightly lower while some other regional indices advanced.

The combination of high oil prices + elevated US yields + Fed uncertainty remains the key external risk combination for emerging markets.

Other Important Market Events to Watch

UPI Merchant Charges

The new UPI monetisation framework remains an important domestic market development.

The proposed 0.4% charge on eligible merchant transactions above ₹2,000 from October 15 has put payment companies, banks and cash-management businesses in focus.

New IPO Listings

Glass Wall Systems and Kanohar Electricals made their stock-market debuts today, providing fresh activity in the IPO and newly listed-stock segment.

Crude Oil

Brent crude around $108 per barrel remains a major concern for India’s inflation, rupee and corporate-margin outlook.

US Fed

The September FOMC decision is the most important international macro event for Indian markets today, particularly because investors are watching the future path of US rates and Treasury yields.

What to Watch After Today’s Rebound

Wednesday’s recovery restored some of Tuesday’s losses, but the broader market remains sensitive to global factors.

The key factors for the next trading session will be:

  • US Federal Reserve rate decision and guidance
  • US Treasury yields
  • Brent crude oil prices
  • USD/INR movement
  • FII selling and DII buying
  • Middle East developments
  • Banking and financial-stock performance
  • UPI monetisation developments
  • Trading in newly listed Glass Wall Systems and Kanohar Electricals

The immediate market reaction to the Fed decision could be particularly important because Indian equities are already dealing with high crude prices and continued foreign selling.

Stock Market Today: Key Takeaway

Indian equities rebounded on September 16 after Tuesday’s sharp decline, with Nifty and Bank Nifty recovering on buying in banks, financials, FMCG and selected large-cap stocks. HDFC Life, SBI Life, SBI and ITC were among the stocks attracting buying, while Groww, Pine Labs and Molbio Diagnostics faced pressure for company-specific reasons.

However, the recovery came against a challenging global backdrop. Crude oil near $108, US Treasury yields around 5%, continued FII selling and the US Federal Reserve decision remain the major factors that could influence market sentiment in the near term.
