In a major boost to India’s defence manufacturing sector, Bharat Forge Limited has secured a ₹425 crore contract from the Ministry of Defence for the supply of advanced Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) to the Indian Navy. The contract was awarded on June 19, 2026, and marks a significant step in Bharat Forge’s expansion into high-value defence technologies.
Advanced Power Systems for Kolkata-Class Warships
Under the agreement, Bharat Forge will manufacture and supply 1.25 MW Gas Turbine Generators that will be installed on Kolkata-class naval ships. These advanced GTGs will replace existing lower-capacity generators, enhancing onboard power generation capabilities and improving the operational efficiency of the fleet.
The project is scheduled to be executed over a period of five years, providing the company with a stable and long-term revenue opportunity while strengthening its position in India’s growing defence ecosystem.
Strategic Entry into the Marine Gas Turbine Segment
The contract represents more than just a sizeable order value. It officially marks Bharat Forge’s entry into the specialised marine gas turbine business, a segment with significant growth potential and high technological barriers.
A notable aspect of the project is that it falls under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, reflecting the government’s continued focus on promoting indigenous defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imports.
The GTGs being supplied by Bharat Forge will become the first indigenous gas turbine-based power plants deployed aboard Indian Naval ships, highlighting a major achievement for India’s defence and engineering capabilities.
New Facility to Support Future Growth
To successfully execute the project and support future opportunities, Bharat Forge plans to establish a dedicated Gas Turbine Generator integration and testing facility. This investment is expected to strengthen the company’s technical expertise and position it as a comprehensive defence solutions provider.
The company has also indicated plans to participate in future programs involving larger power plants and gas turbine propulsion. Such initiatives could help Bharat Forge build a strong long-term presence in the marine defence sector while supporting India’s objective of achieving greater self-reliance in critical defence technologies.
