Balrampur Chini Mills Ignites Sustainable Future: ‘Bioyug On Wheels’ Showcases 80,000 TPA PLA Bioplastics Vision
Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML), one of India’s leading integrated sugar manufacturers, is expanding its sustainability initiatives through its ‘Bioyug On Wheels’ awareness campaign, aimed at promoting environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastics. The campaign recently reached Rajkot, Gujarat, where it showcased the company’s bio-based Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) products and highlighted the growing role of biodegradable materials in supporting a circular economy.
The initiative forms part of BCML’s broader strategy to promote sustainable innovation while demonstrating how agricultural resources such as sugarcane can be transformed into value-added, eco-friendly products.
Demonstrating Practical Alternatives to Single-Use Plastics
The travelling exhibition introduced visitors to a range of PLA-based biodegradable products, including packaging materials, bottles, cups, cutlery, and other everyday consumer items. The objective was to increase awareness of sustainable alternatives that can help reduce dependence on conventional petroleum-based plastics.
More than 500 participants, including students, teachers, municipal officials, and local residents, attended the Rajkot event, where they explored interactive product displays and learned about the environmental benefits of compostable bioplastics.
Research Highlights Environmental Benefits
During the campaign, BCML also highlighted findings from recent research indicating the environmental advantages of PLA materials under Indian conditions.
According to a study conducted by a leading government research institution, PLA microplastic particles declined from 287 particles per kilogram of soil to just 18 particles per kilogram within 180 days, demonstrating the material’s ability to break down significantly faster than conventional plastic under suitable conditions.
The findings support the growing interest in biodegradable materials as part of India’s efforts to reduce plastic waste and encourage sustainable consumption.
India’s First Commercial PLA Manufacturing Facility
Alongside its awareness initiatives, Balrampur Chini Mills is making a major investment in green manufacturing by establishing India’s first commercial Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) production facility.
Project Highlights
- Product: Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) Bioplastics
- Initial Production Capacity: 80,000 tonnes per annum (TPA)
- Raw Material: Sugarcane-based renewable feedstock
- Objective: Promote biodegradable alternatives and support India’s circular economy
The upcoming facility is expected to strengthen domestic production of bio-based plastics while reducing reliance on imported sustainable materials.
Supporting India’s Green Transition
Commenting on the campaign, Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills, said the enthusiastic response received in Rajkot reflects growing public awareness about environmentally responsible products. She noted that PLA bioplastics offer a practical and sustainable alternative to conventional single-use plastics, enabling consumers and businesses to make more environmentally conscious choices.
Through initiatives such as Bioyug On Wheels and its investment in large-scale PLA manufacturing, Balrampur Chini Mills is expanding beyond its traditional sugar business and strengthening its position in India’s emerging bio-based materials industry.
The company’s continued focus on renewable products and sustainable manufacturing aligns with the country’s broader environmental goals while creating new growth opportunities in the rapidly developing green economy.
