Hindustan Zinc Raises Renewable Power Consumption to 22%, Targets 70% by FY28

Hindustan Zinc Limited has stepped up its clean energy transition, increasing the share of renewable power in its overall electricity consumption to 22%, up from approximately 18% in FY26. The company is now targeting around 70% renewable power consumption by FY28 as it works to reduce the environmental footprint of its mining and smelting operations.

The company disclosed the development on August 18, 2026, under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.

Renewable Power Consumption Rises to 22%

Hindustan Zinc has increased renewable energy’s contribution to its overall power consumption from around 18% in FY26 to 22% currently.

The company generated 892 million units of green power during FY26, compared with 632 million units in FY25. The increase in internal green power generation, along with renewable power procurement, has helped improve the company’s overall renewable energy mix.

Hindustan Zinc operates mining and smelting facilities across Rajasthan and Uttarakhand and is continuing to expand renewable energy capabilities across its operations.

530 MW Round-the-Clock Renewable Power Arrangement

To accelerate its transition towards renewable energy, Hindustan Zinc has expanded its round-the-clock renewable power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW.

The arrangement combines renewable energy sources with energy storage solutions to provide reliable clean power for the company’s operations. The additional capacity is expected to progressively increase the share of renewable energy in Hindustan Zinc’s overall electricity consumption.

The company is targeting approximately 70% of its total electricity requirements from renewable sources by FY28.

Solar, Wind and Energy Storage Projects

Hindustan Zinc’s renewable energy strategy combines solar, wind and energy storage solutions to support reliable round-the-clock clean electricity.

The company is also upgrading power connectivity from the state transmission network to the central transmission utility. Alongside this, it is implementing several in-house initiatives aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

Key initiatives include improving the efficiency of waste heat recovery boiler steam turbine generation and developing floating solar installations on water ponds.

Supporting Net Zero 2050 Ambition

The increased use of renewable power forms an important part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader decarbonisation strategy.

The company’s emissions reduction pathway has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and supports its ambition of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

Commenting on the development, Amarendu Prakash, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said the company’s transition towards renewable power is aimed not only at decarbonisation but also at building a more resilient, competitive and responsible business.

He highlighted the company’s progress from 22% renewable power consumption today towards its target of 70% by FY28, positioning clean energy as an important part of Hindustan Zinc’s future growth strategy.

Hindustan Zinc’s Sustainability Focus

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and among the world’s top 10 silver producers.

The company has been recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining category for the third consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025, according to the company.

Hindustan Zinc also became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) in 2025. The company has launched EcoZen, a low-carbon green zinc brand produced using renewable energy.

The company also states that it is a 3.32-times water-positive company and is working towards its Net Zero emissions ambition.

What This Means for Hindustan Zinc

Hindustan Zinc’s latest renewable energy announcement highlights the company’s focus on reducing dependence on conventional power while improving the sustainability of its energy-intensive mining and smelting operations.

Increasing renewable power consumption from 22% currently to approximately 70% by FY28 represents a significant planned shift in the company’s power mix. The expansion of the round-the-clock renewable power arrangement to 530 MW is expected to be an important component of this transition.

For investors, the development is particularly relevant as Hindustan Zinc moves towards its broader multi-metal growth strategy, with clean energy increasingly becoming an integral part of its long-term operating and sustainability roadmap.
