Lupin Secures Tentative US FDA Approval for Generic Enzalutamide, Bolstering Oncology Portfolio

The race for pharmaceutical innovation and accessibility just saw a significant milestone, with global pharma major Lupin Limited announcing it has received tentative approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Enzalutamide Tablets. This pivotal development, dated June 26, 2026, positions Lupin to enter a critical therapeutic area in the lucrative U.S. market.

Enzalutamide is the generic equivalent of Astellas’ blockbuster prostate cancer drug, Xtandi®. Lupin’s tentative approval covers strengths of 40 mg and 80 mg, deemed bioequivalent to the reference listed drug. Crucially, Lupin has also secured tentative approval for unique 120 mg and 160 mg strengths, offering healthcare providers and patients expanded dosing options beyond the traditional Xtandi® offerings.

This tentative approval is a powerful indicator of Lupin’s robust research and development capabilities and its strategic focus on complex generics. While a full commercial launch awaits the expiration of market exclusivity for Xtandi®, this nod from the FDA signifies a clear pathway to market entry, promising future revenue streams for the Mumbai-headquartered pharmaceutical giant.

For patients battling prostate cancer, the eventual availability of Lupin’s generic Enzalutamide could translate into more affordable and accessible treatment options, a common benefit of generic drug introductions. For investors, it signals Lupin’s continued expansion in high-value therapy areas, reinforcing its position as a global pharmaceutical leader committed to improving health outcomes worldwide. This move is a testament to Lupin’s strategic vision and its potential to capture significant market share in the oncology segment.
