Tata Power Renewables Commissions 72.5 MW Captive Solar Project for Tata Steel in Rajasthan

Tata Power Renewables Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power project for Tata Steel Limited at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The project is expected to strengthen Tata Steel’s decarbonisation efforts while adding to Tata Power’s growing renewable energy portfolio.

The project was announced by The Tata Power Company Limited on August 27, 2026.

72.5 MW Solar Project to Supply Green Energy to Tata Steel

The 72.5 MW captive solar project has been developed by TPREL for Tata Steel through TP Vardhman Surya Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy.

Located at Kalasar, Bikaner, Rajasthan, the project integrates large-scale solar generation with modern technology solutions and is aimed at supporting the clean-energy requirements of Tata Steel.

The project is expected to generate approximately 166 million units (MUs) of green energy annually.

Project to Offset 1.18 Lakh Tonnes of Carbon Emissions Annually

One of the key benefits of the project is its contribution to industrial decarbonisation. According to Tata Power, the solar project is expected to offset around 1,18,856 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

This is expected to support Tata Steel’s sustainability and decarbonisation objectives while increasing the use of renewable energy in industrial operations.

The project uses 1,71,360 solar modules, which have been manufactured by TP Solar Limited.

TPREL’s Renewable Energy Capacity Reaches 12.3 GW

With the addition of the 72.5 MW project, Tata Power Renewable Energy’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 GW.

Of this capacity, around 7 GW is operational, comprising approximately:

  • 5.7 GW of solar capacity
  • 1.3 GW of wind capacity

Another approximately 5.3 GW is under various stages of implementation, comprising:

  • 2.2 GW of solar projects
  • 3.1 GW of wind projects

These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next 6 to 24 months.

Focus on Industrial Decarbonisation

The latest project highlights TPREL’s growing role in providing renewable energy solutions to industrial customers. The company serves sectors including steel, automobiles, petrochemicals, FMCG, biotechnology, IT, communications and data centres, among others.

The company said the project demonstrates its engineering and execution capabilities in delivering large-scale renewable energy assets within demanding timelines.

TPREL is also focusing on clean-energy infrastructure aimed at improving grid resilience and supporting the transition of energy-intensive industries toward lower-carbon operations.

Tata Power Expands Clean Energy Portfolio

Tata Power continues to expand its presence across India’s renewable energy and broader power ecosystem.

The company’s total operational and under-construction capacity has surpassed 26 GW, including approximately 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity and around 8.8 GW of thermal generation capacity.

The company also has a transmission and distribution network spanning more than 7,800 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, including pipeline projects, and serves more than 13 million customers across its distribution businesses.

In solar manufacturing, Tata Power has established 4.9 GW of integrated solar cell and module manufacturing capacity. The company has also signed 2.8 GW of pumped hydro storage projects and expanded its electric vehicle charging network to more than 7,000 public charging points across 717 cities and towns in India.

Supporting India’s Renewable Energy Transition

The commissioning of the 72.5 MW captive solar project adds to Tata Power’s renewable energy expansion and supports the increasing adoption of clean power by industrial companies.

The project also aligns with India’s broader objective of increasing non-fossil fuel electricity capacity, while Tata Power continues to work toward its stated goal of achieving Net Zero by 2045.

For Tata Steel, the captive solar project provides an additional source of renewable energy while supporting its long-term decarbonisation strategy. For TPREL, the project strengthens its position in the industrial renewable energy segment and demonstrates its ability to execute customised clean-energy solutions for large corporate customers.
