Vishnu Chemicals and France’s DCX Chrome Form JV for 6,000 MTPA Chromium Plant

Vishnu Chemicals Limited has entered into a definitive Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with France-based DCX Chrome SAS to establish a new greenfield manufacturing facility for high-purity chromium metal in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

The proposed joint venture will combine Vishnu Chemicals’ manufacturing and raw-material capabilities with DCX Chrome’s specialised chromium metal manufacturing technology.

The companies will hold an equal 50% equity stake in the proposed joint venture.

Vishnu Chemicals to Set Up 6,000 MTPA Chromium Plant

Under the agreement, the partners plan to establish a greenfield facility with an installed capacity of approximately 6,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The plant will be dedicated to the production of high-purity chromium metal.

The facility is planned at Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh.

Vishnu Chemicals said the project is intended to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities for advanced engineering materials that are currently largely dependent on imports.

50:50 JV Between Vishnu Chemicals and DCX Chrome

The proposed joint venture will be equally owned by Vishnu Chemicals and DCX Chrome, with both companies holding a 50% equity stake.

The partnership brings together complementary capabilities.

Vishnu Chemicals will contribute its domestic manufacturing expertise and position in chromium chemicals, while DCX Chrome will provide its specialised process technology and know-how in high-purity chromium metal production.

According to Vishnu Chemicals, the company will also provide chrome oxide green as a raw material to the proposed joint venture.

French Technology to Support High-Purity Chromium Production

A key element of the partnership is access to DCX Chrome’s proprietary process technology.

DCX specialises in high-purity aluminothermic chromium metal and specialised chromium powders.

The technology transfer is intended to enable domestic production of chromium metal meeting stringent requirements for applications such as aerospace and other advanced industries.

This could also help reduce India’s dependence on imported high-purity chromium metal.

Aerospace and Defence Emerging as Key Applications

High-purity chromium metal is used in applications requiring materials capable of operating under demanding temperature and corrosion conditions.

The companies highlighted potential applications across several industries, including:

  • Aerospace
  • Defence
  • Energy
  • Nuclear power
  • Oil and gas
  • Gas turbines
  • Chemical processing
  • Advanced engineering materials

In aerospace, chromium can be used in high-temperature engine components, including combustion chambers, turbine components, blades, vanes and casings.

The companies also highlighted applications in oil and gas drilling equipment and components exposed to corrosive environments.

Import Substitution and Atmanirbhar Bharat Angle

One of the strategic objectives of the proposed facility is to establish a domestic source of high-purity chromium metal.

The company said the project could help address India’s dependence on imported chromium metal and strengthen supply-chain security for strategic industries.

This gives the project an additional import-substitution and Atmanirbhar Bharat angle.

Domestic availability could be particularly relevant for sectors such as aerospace, defence and energy, where reliable access to specialised materials is strategically important.

Visakhapatnam to Become Manufacturing Base

The greenfield facility will be located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Beyond manufacturing capacity, Vishnu Chemicals said the project is expected to support skilled engineering and operational employment in the region.

The facility is therefore positioned as both a specialty-materials manufacturing project and a potential contributor to industrial development in Andhra Pradesh.

Vishnu Chemicals Expands Beyond Traditional Chromium Chemicals

Vishnu Chemicals is already a major producer of chromium chemicals, along with barium and strontium chemicals.

The proposed JV could allow the company to move further into high-purity chromium metal and advanced engineering materials.

This represents a potential extension of its existing chromium-related capabilities into a more specialised product category.

However, investors should note that the proposed plant is a new greenfield project, meaning the financial contribution will depend on project execution, commissioning, capacity utilisation and market demand after commercial operations begin.

DCX Chrome Brings Global Manufacturing Expertise

DCX Chrome SAS is a France-based manufacturer specialising in high-purity aluminothermic chromium metal and specialised chromium powders.

The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Delachaux Group and has manufacturing operations in France and the United States, according to the announcement.

DCX Chrome supplies customers in industries including aerospace, energy, superalloys and welding.

The partnership therefore gives Vishnu Chemicals access to an established international technology and customer ecosystem in high-purity chromium products.

Investor Takeaway

The Vishnu Chemicals-DCX Chrome JV is strategically significant because it combines specialty chemicals manufacturing, advanced materials technology and domestic production of high-purity chromium metal.

The proposed 6,000 MTPA greenfield facility could provide Vishnu Chemicals with an opportunity to expand into a specialised downstream chromium product while supporting applications in aerospace, defence and energy.

The 50:50 structure also brings an international technology partner into the project.

For investors, the next important developments to monitor will be project investment and financing details, construction progress, technology implementation, commissioning timelines, customer contracts and the eventual capacity utilisation of the plant.

Importantly, the announcement does not disclose the total project cost, Vishnu Chemicals’ exact investment amount, expected revenue or profit contribution, or a commercial commissioning date. Therefore, the 6,000 MTPA capacity should not yet be treated as an immediate addition to the company’s operating capacity.
