Shaktikanta Das, the current RBI Governor, completes his tenure tomorrow. The government has appointed Mr. Sanjay Malhotra, formerly the Revenue Secretary, as the new RBI Governor effective November 11. Mr. Malhotra, a computer science graduate from IIT Kharagpur with a master’s degree in public policy from a U.S. university, brings 33 years of diverse experience across sectors such as power, finance, taxation, IT, and mining.
Recent economic indicators present challenges: inflation has surged to its worst levels in recent months, and GDP growth has declined to 5.4% as of November 29, down from 6.7% on August 30, 2024.
Shaktikanta Das is credited with navigating through challenging times. It remains to be seen how markets will respond to the leadership transition under Sanjay Malhotra.
