Stock Market Today: 17-Aug-2026 – Key Highlights and Trends

Market Summary – August 17, 2026

Indian equity markets remained under pressure on Monday as geopolitical concerns, elevated crude oil prices and continued selling in large-cap stocks weighed on sentiment. The Nifty 50 declined 78.35 points, or 0.32%, to close at 24,287.65, marking its fifth consecutive session of losses. The Sensex fell 281.09 points to 77,728.16.

The broader market, however, showed relative resilience, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks outperforming the frontline indices.

Nifty 50: Fifth Consecutive Session of Decline

The Nifty 50 closed at 24,287.65, down 0.32%.

The index remained below the important 24,400–24,500 zone, keeping the short-term market structure cautious. Analysts are watching 24,200 as an important support level, while 24,500 remains a key resistance area. A decisive break below 24,200 could increase selling pressure toward 24,050–24,000.

The major pressure came from IT and selected heavyweight stocks, while metals, pharma and some other pockets of the market provided support.

Bank Nifty: Resilient Despite Weak Market

Bank Nifty showed considerably better resilience than the broader benchmark.

The index closed at around 57,497.80, gaining 6.70 points, or approximately 0.01%.

Banking stocks therefore remained relatively stable despite the negative broader-market trend.

Axis Bank in Focus

Axis Bank was one of the stronger large-cap banking names during Monday’s session.

The stock gained around 1% and closed near ₹1,230, outperforming several major banking peers.

The relative strength in Axis Bank is worth tracking, particularly if Bank Nifty starts recovering in the coming sessions.

F&O Stocks in Focus

Several F&O and actively traded stocks remained on the radar of traders today.

BSE

BSE Ltd was among the prominent stocks under pressure.

The stock fell sharply after Jefferies downgraded BSE from Hold to Underperform and reduced its target price from ₹3,520 to ₹2,940. The brokerage highlighted concerns around derivatives volumes, regulatory changes, the Closing Auction Session and other factors that could affect earnings growth.

BSE therefore remains an important stock to watch for further volatility.

Cupid

Cupid Ltd remained among the actively watched mid-cap names. Traders should monitor volume expansion and whether the stock can sustain its recent momentum rather than relying only on one-day price movements.

Vikram Solar

Vikram Solar continued to remain in focus as investors track India’s renewable-energy and solar manufacturing theme. Investors are reacting positively to the board’s approval of a Rs 5,589 crore capital expenditure plan.

The stock belongs to a sector that remains closely linked to India’s renewable-energy capacity expansion, domestic manufacturing and the broader energy-transition story.

Manorama Industries

Manorama Industries also remained on the radar of market participants.

Manorama Industries shares jumped more than 8% after the company reported strong Q1 FY27 results on August 14, 2026. The rally was supported by a 39.5% year-on-year rise in revenue and a 67.6% increase in net profit.

The stock continues to attract attention from traders and investors following its business growth and its position in the specialty fats and ingredients segment.

Pharma: IPCA Laboratories

IPCA Laboratories remained an important pharmaceutical stock to track.

The pharma sector has shown selective strength in the current market environment, with investors focusing on company-specific earnings, export opportunities and regulatory developments.

IPCA can therefore remain on the watchlist for volume-based breakouts and sector rotation.

Metals: Hindustan Copper

Hindustan Copper remained an important metal-sector stock to monitor.

Copper prices are increasing, and expectations surrounding infrastructure, electrification, renewable energy, and electric vehicles continue to provide a structural backdrop for copper-related companies.

With metal stocks showing relative strength in today’s market, Hindustan Copper could remain an important stock for traders tracking the metal theme.

Azad Engineering

Azad Engineering remained another stock in focus, particularly for investors tracking the aerospace and high-precision engineering theme.

The company operates in a sector benefiting from increasing localisation, aerospace manufacturing and industrial supply-chain opportunities.

For traders, price-volume behaviour will remain important after the recent volatility seen across several high-growth manufacturing stocks.

Netweb Technologies

Netweb Technologies also remained on the radar as investors continue to track India’s high-performance computing, data-centre and AI infrastructure theme.

The broader AI and data-centre investment cycle continues to keep technology infrastructure companies in focus.

Netweb is therefore one of the stocks worth watching for strong volume activity and momentum continuation.

Axis Bank: Banking Strength Stands Out

Axis Bank deserves separate attention in today’s market because it moved against the broader weakness.

The stock gained around 1.03% to ₹1,230, while the Sensex declined 0.36%.

This relative strength could make Axis Bank an important stock to monitor if banking stocks lead the next market recovery.

IPO Market: Strong Primary-Market Activity

The IPO market remains extremely active this week, with several issues either opening, completing allotment or making their stock-market debut.

Dhoot Transmission Makes Strong Debut

Dhoot Transmission made a powerful debut on August 17.

The stock listed at a significant premium to its IPO price of ₹871. It opened at around ₹1,193.80 on BSE and ₹1,200 on NSE, representing roughly a 38% premium.

The strong listing highlights continued investor appetite for reasonably priced companies with manufacturing and EV-related growth opportunities.

The IPO had raised approximately ₹3,066.89 crore, including a fresh issue and an offer for sale.

Molbio Diagnostics Lists at 21% Premium

Molbio Diagnostics also made a strong debut.

The stock opened at approximately ₹980, compared with its IPO price of ₹807, representing a premium of about 21%.

The IPO raised approximately ₹939.70 crore and included both a fresh issue and an offer for sale.

Horizon Industrial Parks IPO Opens

The Horizon Industrial Parks IPO opened for subscription on August 17.

The company is targeting approximately ₹2,600 crore, with the price band set at ₹57–₹60 per share. The issue is scheduled to remain open until August 19.

Lalithaa Jewellery Mart IPO

The Lalithaa Jewellery Mart IPO is also scheduled to open during the week, adding another major issue to an already busy primary-market calendar.

Shankesh Jewellers

The Shankesh Jewellers IPO is scheduled for August 18–20, adding further activity to the jewellery and retail IPO segment.

Sunshine Pictures

The Sunshine Pictures IPO is also scheduled to open during the week, with the issue expected to attract attention from investors looking for opportunities in the media and entertainment sector.

Gaja Alternative Asset Management

Gaja Alternative Asset Management is scheduled to enter the primary market later in the week, adding an asset-management focused offering to the IPO calendar.

Overall, seven companies are expected to access the primary market between August 17 and August 21, targeting more than ₹6,400 crore in aggregate.

IPO Watchlist for This Week

Investors can keep the following names on their IPO calendar:

  • Horizon Industrial Parks – August 17–19
  • Lalithaa Jewellery Mart – August 17–19
  • Shankesh Jewellers – August 18–20
  • Sunshine Pictures – August 18–20
  • Gaja Alternative Asset Management – August 19–21
  • Tempsens Instruments – upcoming
  • Augmont – upcoming
  • Mopshop Distribution – SME IPO
  • Dhanwel Hybrid Seeds – SME IPO

Market Outlook

The immediate market setup remains cautious.

The combination of elevated crude prices, Middle East geopolitical tensions and continued weakness in IT stocks is keeping pressure on the benchmark indices. Brent crude was around $89 a barrel, adding to concerns about India’s import bill and inflationary pressures.

At the same time, the relative strength of mid-caps, small-caps, metals and selected banking stocks indicates that the market is not experiencing broad-based selling.

For traders, the key levels to monitor are:

  • Nifty support: 24,200
  • Nifty immediate resistance: 24,500
  • Bank Nifty: Watch whether it continues to outperform Nifty
  • BSE: High volatility after the Jefferies downgrade
  • Axis Bank: Relative strength in banking
  • Hindustan Copper: Metal-sector momentum
  • Netweb Technologies: AI/data-centre theme
  • Azad Engineering: Aerospace and precision engineering theme
  • Dhoot Transmission & Molbio: Post-listing price discovery

Point to considered

Monday’s market action showed a clear divide between weak benchmark indices and stronger pockets of the broader market. Nifty declined for the fifth consecutive session, while Bank Nifty remained almost flat.

At the stock level, BSE’s downgrade-driven fall, Axis Bank’s relative strength, metal stocks such as Hindustan Copper, and manufacturing/technology names including Vikram Solar, Azad Engineering and Netweb Technologies remain important areas to watch.

Meanwhile, the primary market remains extremely active, with Dhoot Transmission and Molbio Diagnostics delivering strong listings and a fresh wave of IPOs opening this week.

Investors should track price-volume action, support/resistance levels, and company-specific developments rather than treating individual stock movements as standalone buy or sell signals.
