Sun Pharma Receives Approval to Launch Semaglutide in Brazil, Strengthening Global Diabetes Portfolio

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited has achieved a significant regulatory milestone after receiving approval from Brazil’s Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) to manufacture and market semaglutide injection in Brazil. The approval expands Sun Pharma’s presence in the rapidly growing diabetes treatment market and reinforces its strategy of strengthening its global specialty and chronic care portfolio.

ANVISA Approves Semaglutide for Type 2 Diabetes

The approval allows Sun Pharma to manufacture and commercialize semaglutide injection for the treatment of adults with inadequately controlled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, to be used alongside diet and exercise.

Semaglutide belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class of medicines and is widely recognized for helping improve blood sugar control through convenient once-weekly dosing.

Commercial Launch Planned with Hypera Pharma

Sun Pharma plans to launch the product in Brazil within the next few days through its strategic partnership with Hypera Pharma, one of Brazil’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

The product will be available as a pre-filled multi-dose injectable pen in two strengths:

  • 2 mg / 1.5 mL
  • 4 mg / 3 mL

The once-weekly injection is designed to offer greater convenience for patients managing Type 2 diabetes.

Large Market Opportunity in Brazil

Brazil represents an attractive growth opportunity for diabetes therapies.

According to the company, the semaglutide injectable market in Brazil is valued at approximately US$413 million (IQVIA MAT June 2026), providing a significant commercial opportunity for Sun Pharma as demand for advanced diabetes treatments continues to rise.

Management Commentary

Commenting on the approval, Aalok Shanghvi, Chief Operating Officer of Sun Pharma, said the approval expands access to an evidence-based treatment option for people living with inadequately controlled Type 2 diabetes while demonstrating the company’s strong development and manufacturing capabilities.

Digvijay Singh, Regional Head – Brazil & LATAM, added that the approval marks an important milestone in strengthening Sun Pharma’s diabetes portfolio in Brazil. He emphasized that the company will work closely with Hypera Pharma to improve access to diabetes care across the country.

Strengthening Sun Pharma’s Global Diabetes Business

The latest approval further expands Sun Pharma’s international presence in chronic disease therapies.

As India’s largest pharmaceutical company and one of the world’s leading generic drug manufacturers, Sun Pharma continues to invest in innovative medicines, specialty therapies, and global market expansion. The company operates in more than 100 countries with manufacturing facilities spread across five continents.

The addition of semaglutide to its Brazil portfolio is expected to strengthen its position in the fast-growing diabetes segment and enhance long-term revenue opportunities in Latin America.

Why This Matters for Investors

The approval is strategically important because:

  • It expands Sun Pharma’s presence in the growing GLP-1 diabetes therapy market.
  • Brazil offers a US$413 million market opportunity for semaglutide injections.
  • The partnership with Hypera Pharma provides an established commercial distribution network.
  • The launch supports Sun Pharma’s long-term strategy of expanding its global specialty and chronic care portfolio.
