Unihealth Hospitals Achieves Regional First with Bilateral Robotic Direct Anterior Hip Replacement at UMC Hospitals

Unihealth Hospitals Limited has announced a significant clinical milestone after its UMC Hospitals facility in Navi Mumbai successfully performed the region’s first Bilateral Robotic Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) Total Hip Replacement. The advanced orthopedic procedure highlights the hospital’s focus on adopting cutting-edge robotic technology and minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes.

The achievement reinforces Unihealth Hospitals’ commitment to delivering high-precision, technology-enabled healthcare and strengthening its position in advanced orthopedic care.

Landmark Surgery for Advanced Hip Disease

The pioneering procedure was performed on a 67-year-old patient from Hubballi, Karnataka, who had been suffering from Stage IV Avascular Necrosis (AVN) affecting both hip joints for nearly three years.

The surgery was led by Dr. Avinash Dev Upadhyay, Consultant Orthopedic and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon at UMC Hospitals, using a combination of robotic-assisted technology and the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) to perform a bilateral total hip replacement.

Advanced Surgical Technique

The procedure combined two advanced technologies to enhance surgical precision and patient recovery.

Direct Anterior Approach (DAA)

Unlike conventional hip replacement techniques, the Direct Anterior Approach accesses the hip joint through natural muscle planes without cutting or detaching major muscles.

This minimally invasive technique offers several potential benefits, including:

  • Reduced muscle damage.
  • Less post-operative pain.
  • Faster recovery.
  • Improved mobility after surgery.

Robotic-Assisted Precision

The robotic platform provided real-time guidance throughout the procedure, helping surgeons achieve highly accurate implant placement and alignment.

Using pre-operative imaging and intraoperative feedback, the robotic system assisted in:

  • Precise implant positioning.
  • Improved joint stability.
  • Better restoration of limb length.
  • Enhanced surgical accuracy.

Faster Patient Recovery

One of the key advantages of the tissue-sparing surgical approach was the patient’s rapid post-operative recovery.

Because the surrounding muscles were preserved, the patient was able to stand and walk with assistance on the same day as the surgery, demonstrating the potential benefits of combining minimally invasive techniques with robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery.

Strengthening Advanced Orthopedic Care

The successful completion of the region’s first Bilateral Robotic Direct Anterior Total Hip Replacement further enhances UMC Hospitals’ capabilities in complex orthopedic procedures.

By investing in advanced surgical technologies and specialized clinical expertise, Unihealth Hospitals aims to offer patients access to modern treatment options that improve surgical precision, reduce recovery time, and deliver better long-term outcomes.

Strategic Significance

This clinical milestone strengthens Unihealth Hospitals’ position as a growing center for advanced orthopedic and joint replacement care in western India.

The availability of high-precision, robotic-assisted procedures is expected to enhance the hospital’s reputation among patients seeking specialized tertiary healthcare services while supporting its long-term strategy of expanding technology-driven medical excellence.
