Vikram Solar Powers Up New Tamil Nadu Mega-Facility, Setting Stage for 12 GW Integrated Manufacturing

It’s a landmark moment in India’s journey towards energy self-reliance! Today, Vikram Solar, a cornerstone of India’s burgeoning solar manufacturing sector, officially launched its first PV modules from its state-of-the-art mega-facility in Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu.

This isn’t just the inauguration of another factory; it signifies a major strategic advancement. The commissioning of module production at this new site positions Vikram Solar – and India itself – as a key player in building a fully integrated solar energy ecosystem right here on home soil.

Located on an impressive 6 lakh square feet (roughly equivalent to over 100 acres), the greenfield plant represents cutting-edge technology. Designed with sophisticated automation and smart manufacturing systems, it aims to drastically reduce manual labor while maximizing efficiency and precision in module production. The initial Hypersol N-Type TOPCon G12R modules boast efficiencies exceeding 23%, showcasing high performance.

But advanced tech is just one facet of this facility’s significance. Vikram Solar Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. Gyanesh Chaudhary, highlighted the investment as more than just bricks and mortar: “This is an investment in the future of Indian solar manufacturing.” Furthermore, the plant promises to be a substantial regional employer, likely creating over 1,500 skilled jobs.

Looking ahead, this facility is clearly part of a larger vision. Vikram Solar aims for significant vertical integration:

  • Solar Cell Capacity: Growing from current levels towards ambitious targets of 9 GW by FY27 and further expansion to 12 GW by FY28.
  • Wafer & Ingot Manufacturing: Plans are underway to build out capabilities, targeting 12 GW of production by FY29-30.

This roadmap underscores a commitment to strengthening the domestic supply chain, enhancing quality control throughout solar product creation, and boosting India’s renewable energy manufacturing prowess. With over 10 GW already deployed globally from their existing capacities, Vikram Solar is clearly building scale for future demand.

The launch of these first modules marks an important step forward for Vikram Solar and a powerful signal that India is rapidly closing the loop on solar manufacturing capabilities.
