Great Eastern Shipping Unveils Strategic Fleet Modernization with LR2 Tanker Swap

The Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited (GE Shipping) has announced a strategic fleet renewal initiative by selling one of its older LR2 tankers and acquiring a newer vessel. The move is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to modernize its fleet, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen its long-term competitiveness in the global shipping industry.

Both transactions are expected to be completed during the second quarter of FY27.

GE Shipping to Sell ‘Jag Lokesh’

GE Shipping has entered into an agreement to sell its 2009-built LR2 tanker, “Jag Lokesh,” with a carrying capacity of approximately 105,900 deadweight tonnes (DWT).

The vessel has been sold to an unaffiliated third party. While the company has not disclosed the financial details of the transaction, the sale forms part of its regular fleet optimization strategy.

Acquisition of a Newer LR2 Product Tanker

Alongside the sale, GE Shipping has also signed an agreement to acquire a 2015-built second-hand LR2 Product Tanker.

The addition of a newer vessel is expected to enhance the overall quality and efficiency of the company’s fleet while maintaining its presence in the product tanker segment.

Fleet renewal through the replacement of older ships with newer ones is a common strategy adopted by global shipping companies to improve operational performance and meet evolving industry standards.

Focus on Fleet Modernization

Replacing an older vessel with a newer tanker offers several operational advantages, including:

  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Better compliance with environmental regulations
  • Enhanced reliability and operational performance
  • Increased attractiveness to global charterers

By continuously upgrading its fleet, GE Shipping aims to remain competitive in a shipping market where efficiency and sustainability have become increasingly important.

Strong Fleet Position

Following the completion of the transactions, GE Shipping will continue to maintain a sizeable fleet across tanker and dry bulk shipping segments.

Currently, the company’s owned fleet comprises 40 vessels, including:

  • 25 Tankers
  • 15 Dry Bulk Carriers

Together, these vessels represent a total carrying capacity of approximately 3.24 million DWT.

The company has also reported high fleet utilization levels, reflecting strong demand across its shipping operations.
