Jindal Stainless Powers India’s Green Rail Future, Supplies for First Hydrogen Train
Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) has contributed to a major milestone in India’s sustainable transportation journey by supplying nearly 40% of the total stainless steel requirement for the country’s first hydrogen-powered train.
The development reinforces Jindal Stainless’s growing role in India’s railway modernization programme and highlights the increasing use of advanced stainless steel in next-generation, environmentally friendly transportation systems.
Premium Stainless Steel for Hydrogen Train Coaches
For the project, Jindal Stainless supplied its premium X5CrNi1810 austenitic stainless steel, manufactured at the company’s Jajpur and Hisar production facilities.
The material has been used in the fabrication of hydrogen train coaches, where durability, safety, and corrosion resistance are essential for long-term performance.
Why Stainless Steel Matters
According to the company, stainless steel offers several advantages for modern railway applications, including:
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- High strength-to-weight ratio
- Superior crashworthiness
- Fire and impact resistance
- Longer service life
- High recyclability and sustainability
These properties make stainless steel well suited for hydrogen-powered trains, which are designed to provide cleaner transportation with lower emissions, improved energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.
Supporting India’s Green Mobility Vision
Commenting on the achievement, Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, said the future of mobility will depend not only on cleaner energy sources but also on advanced materials that improve efficiency, durability, and sustainability.
