InterGlobe Aviation: Willie Walsh Takes Charge as CEO of IndiGo
InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, has officially appointed aviation industry veteran Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with effect from August 3, 2026. The appointment follows the company’s announcement made in March 2026 and comes as IndiGo continues to expand its presence in international markets.
Willie Walsh Brings Over 40 Years of Aviation Experience
Willie Walsh is one of the most experienced leaders in the global aviation industry, with more than four decades of experience.
He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus before moving into senior management roles. Over the years, he has led several of the world’s leading airlines and aviation organizations.
His leadership journey includes:
- Aer Lingus: Appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2001.
- British Airways: Served as CEO from 2005 to 2011.
- International Airlines Group (IAG): Led the airline group as CEO from 2011 to 2020.
- International Air Transport Association (IATA): Most recently served as Director General.
His extensive global experience is expected to support IndiGo’s long-term international growth strategy.
Focus on International Expansion
As CEO, Willie Walsh will lead IndiGo’s overall business strategy with a strong focus on expanding the airline’s international network, improving operational efficiency, strengthening commercial performance, and enhancing the customer experience.
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation, said Walsh’s global aviation expertise will play an important role as IndiGo enters its third decade of operations and accelerates its international expansion plans.

The airline was also recognized as the “Best Airline in India and South Asia” at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025, highlighting its strong reputation for service and operational excellence.
