Alkem Laboratories Q1 FY27: Strong Domestic Growth, Rising R&D Investment and International Expansion

Alkem Laboratories Limited is a pharmaceutical company with more than 50 years of operating history. It develops and manufactures generic formulations, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and biosimilars, with a significant presence in India as well as the US, Latin America, Australia, Europe and other Asian markets. The company has 20 manufacturing facilities and R&D centres.

Brands and Key Therapy Areas

Alkem has a strong domestic branded-generics portfolio and holds leading positions in anti-infectives, gastrointestinal disorders, pain management and supplements. It is also expanding its presence in chronic therapies such as diabetes, neurology, dermatology and urology. The presentation highlights 17 brand families with annual sales above ₹1 billion and 36 brands among the top three in their covered markets.

Consolidated Q1 FY27 Earnings

Alkem Laboratories reported revenue from operations of ₹3,740.2 crore in Q1 FY27, up 10.9% year-on-year. Gross profit increased 15.4% to ₹2,538.9 crore, while EBITDA rose 3.7% to ₹766.1 crore. EBITDA margin stood at 20.5%.

PBT before exceptional items increased 1.8% to ₹772 crore. However, PAT after non-controlling interest declined 21.7% to ₹520 crore, compared with ₹664.3 crore in Q1 FY26.

Domestic Business Growth

India remained Alkem’s largest market, with Q1 FY27 sales of ₹2,497.8 crore, representing 10.3% YoY growth. According to IQVIA data, Alkem grew 13.2%, outperforming the Indian Pharmaceutical Market growth of 12.2%.

The company outperformed the market across seven key therapy areas, including anti-infectives, gastrointestinal, vitamins/minerals/nutrients, pain, anti-diabetic, respiratory and dermatology.

International Business

International sales grew 16% YoY in Q1 FY27. US sales increased 6.5% to ₹743.9 crore, while non-US international sales grew strongly by 34.5% to ₹478.5 crore.

During the quarter, Alkem received five ANDA approvals for the US market, including one tentative approval, supporting its future product pipeline in the market.

Future Growth Plans

Alkem’s next phase of growth is focused on strengthening its core pharmaceutical business while investing in R&D, MedTech and Biotech. The company spent ₹150.2 crore on R&D during Q1 FY27, equivalent to 4% of revenue, compared with 3.5% in Q1 FY26.

The company’s domestic growth strategy continues to focus on its strong therapy franchises, while international expansion—particularly in the US and non-US markets—provides additional avenues for growth.

Steps Taken for Future Growth

Alkem continues to build its product portfolio through R&D and regulatory filings. The five ANDA approvals received during Q1 FY27 add to its US pipeline, while increased R&D spending indicates continued investment in future products.

The company is also looking beyond its traditional pharmaceutical portfolio by investing in MedTech and Biotech, which management has identified as newer opportunities for the next phase of growth.

The presentation does not provide a specific future earnings or profit guidance figure, so no earnings estimate has been included. The potential growth drivers highlighted in the presentation include domestic branded-business growth, US product approvals, faster-growing non-US markets and investment in R&D, MedTech and Biotech.
