Stock Market Today 26 August 2026: Nifty Ends Lower as IT and Telecom Stocks Drag, While Banks and Metals Outperform

Nifty 50 Today: Market Starts Strong but Gives Up Gains

The Indian stock market witnessed a volatile session on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The Nifty 50 initially moved above the 24,350 mark, supported by falling crude oil prices and strength in financial stocks, but the early gains failed to sustain. The index eventually closed at 24,207.75, down 126.80 points or 0.52%. The Sensex also declined 183.16 points to close at 77,472.94.

The major weakness came from IT, telecom and infrastructure-related stocks. At the same time, private banks and metal stocks provided some support. Small-cap stocks performed relatively better, indicating continued stock-specific buying despite weakness in the headline indices.

Important Events Driving the Market Today

One of the biggest global events investors were watching was Nvidia’s quarterly earnings, with the results expected to provide fresh clues about the sustainability of the global artificial-intelligence investment cycle. Asian markets also remained cautious ahead of the announcement.

Another important development was the Hindustan Copper government Offer for Sale (OFS). The government is selling up to 6% of the company through the OFS, with a floor price of ₹514 per share. Retail participation was particularly strong, with bids significantly exceeding the shares reserved for retail investors.

Crude oil prices also remained an important market factor. Oil prices declined sharply, providing some relief to oil-importing economies such as India. However, this positive factor was unable to prevent selling in IT and other heavyweight stocks.

Up Stock Today:

CYIENT: Cyient surged after positive investor sentiment around its strategic growth plans and the company’s acquisition-related developments. Strong buying interest and heavy volumes pushed the stock sharply higher.

HINDZINC: Hindustan Zinc gained after Jefferies raised its target price, citing favourable zinc and silver prices and improving earnings expectations. Easing concerns over a potential government stake sale also supported the stock.

SAIL: SAIL rose amid broad-based strength in metal and steel stocks. Positive sentiment toward the PSU and domestic steel sector attracted buying interest.

FMGOETZE: Federal-Mogul Goetze gained amid heavy trading activity and expectations around its upcoming board meeting. The possibility of an interim dividend announcement added to investor interest.

HINDCOPPER: Hindustan Copper advanced as strong demand for the government’s OFS indicated healthy investor interest. The broader positive outlook for copper and metal stocks also supported the rally.

Stocks Down Today

GAJA: Gaja Alternative Asset Management fell sharply after its strong listing, with investors booking profits after the stock debuted at ₹185, around 15.6% above its ₹160 IPO price. The fall reflects post-listing profit booking and high volatility in the newly listed stock.

VIYASH: Viyash Scientific was among the day’s biggest losers and also saw exceptionally high trading volumes. A large block deal of Viyash shares was reported today, creating selling pressure and weighing on the stock.

VBL: Varun Beverages declined after announcing its entry into the alcoholic beverages/RTD segment through a new subsidiary, KIVA Spirits. Investors appear cautious about the diversification, with broker commentary also highlighting questions around the new business and its impact on the company’s existing growth profile.

GROWW: Groww parent Billionbrains Garage Ventures fell after a large block deal worth around ₹2,500 crore, involving about 2.1% of the company’s equity. Ribbit Capital was reported as the likely seller, triggering concerns about supply and prompting profit booking.

US Market: Key Event Today

The US market is focused on Nvidia’s quarterly earnings report, due after the closing bell on August 26, as the results are expected to provide an important signal on the strength of the global AI investment cycle and could influence technology stocks worldwide. At the same time, the latest July PCE inflation data showed annual headline inflation at 3.7% and core PCE at 3.3%, keeping attention on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook. US stocks opened slightly lower as investors balanced sticky inflation against expectations for Nvidia’s results, while falling oil prices provided some relief. Investors are also watching upcoming Federal Reserve commentary from Jackson Hole, which could provide further clues about the path of US interest rates.
