Hindalco Commissions India’s First Superfine PPT ATH Plant in Karnataka

Hindalco Industries Limited has commissioned a new greenfield manufacturing facility for Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) at Belagavi, Karnataka. The company said the plant marks the first domestic production of this high-value specialty alumina product in India and is aimed at strengthening the country’s self-reliance in advanced fire-safety materials.

The facility has an initial annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes and has been designed for a phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes. The capacity is expected to address a significant portion of the growing domestic demand for safer, halogen-free fire-protection materials used across electrical, infrastructure and mobility applications.

New Plant to Support Fire-Safe Cable and Infrastructure Applications

PPT ATH is a high-value, halogen-free flame-retardant material used in several applications, including Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints.

In cable applications, the material helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases. This makes it relevant for the development of safer electrical systems and infrastructure.

Hindalco expects demand for PPT ATH to increase as fire-safety standards become more stringent and the adoption of electric vehicles, infrastructure projects and sustainable high-performance materials continues to grow.

India’s BIS standard IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables also supports wider adoption of these technologies by aligning domestic standards with global safety benchmarks.

30,000-Tonne Capacity With Scope for Expansion

The first phase of Hindalco’s Belagavi facility has a production capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum. According to the company, this capacity is designed to meet almost the entire current domestic demand for safer cable applications.

The facility can subsequently be expanded to 60,000 tonnes per annum, allowing Hindalco to increase production in line with the growth of the Indian market.

The development also expands Hindalco’s specialty alumina portfolio and provides the company with an opportunity to move further up the value chain into higher-value advanced materials.

In-House Technology and R&D

Hindalco said the plant was developed through an in-house innovation and R&D journey, with technology developed from the ground up.

The facility incorporates automated controls for critical manufacturing processes and an integrated manufacturing ecosystem designed to provide stringent control over feedstock quality and product consistency.

The company’s proprietary InnoSafe Superfine PPT ATH solution is positioned as a halogen-free fire-protection material for next-generation applications.

100% Renewable Energy-Powered Facility

Sustainability is another key feature of the new facility.

The PPT ATH is produced at Hindalco’s Belagavi refinery, which reported a greenhouse-gas intensity of 0.44 tCO₂e per tonne of alumina during YTD FY26, according to the company.

The facility operates using 100% renewable energy sourced from biomass, solar and wind, enabling Hindalco to manufacture specialty materials with a lower environmental footprint.

Hindalco described the facility as the world’s only specialty alumina plant operating entirely on renewable energy, setting a benchmark for sustainable specialty-material manufacturing.

Management Commentary

Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries, said the commissioning of the Superfine precipitated hydrate plant would strengthen the company’s position in specialty alumina and support its strategy of moving up the value chain.

He highlighted the company’s focus on creating value through advanced solutions designed to meet the emerging requirements of customers in India and global markets.

Saurabh Khedekar, CEO – Alumina Business, Hindalco Industries, said the addition of Superfine PPT ATH strengthens the company’s specialty alumina portfolio and supports innovation-led growth.

According to him, the InnoSafe solution is designed to improve fire safety by retarding flame spread and suppressing smoke, while domestic manufacturing can help reduce import dependence and support India’s growing wire and cable industry.

Strengthening India’s Specialty Materials Ecosystem

The commissioning of the Belagavi plant represents a strategic expansion of Hindalco’s specialty alumina business. By combining domestic manufacturing, proprietary technology, quality control and renewable energy, the company aims to build an indigenous supply chain for an important fire-safety material.

The plant is also aligned with the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat objective by reducing dependence on imported specialty materials and increasing domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Hindalco’s Specialty Alumina Portfolio

Hindalco is one of India’s leading specialty alumina producers, with a portfolio of more than 120 grades of non-metallurgical specialty alumina.

Its specialty alumina products serve industries including refractories, ceramics, wire and cable, railways, batteries and electronics, water treatment and bulk chemicals.

The company said its specialty products are supplied to more than 1,000 customers across 42 countries and are designed for applications requiring properties such as flame retardancy, thermal management, electrical insulation, strength and durability.

The addition of Superfine PPT ATH further broadens Hindalco’s portfolio into advanced flame-retardant applications.
