BHEL Secures Landmark Contract for Khavda-Nagpur HVDC Project

In a significant boost to India’s renewable energy infrastructure, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been awarded a critical contract for the Khavda-Nagpur High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Project. This project, tendered by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), is a cornerstone in India’s ambitious renewable energy expansion plan.

Project Overview

The Khavda-Nagpur HVDC project involves the establishment of +800kV, 6000 MW HVDC terminal stations at:

  • Khavda Pooling Station-2 (KPS2) in Gujarat.
  • Nagpur HVDC Station in Maharashtra.

This cutting-edge project is designed to evacuate up to 8GW of renewable power from the Khavda Renewable Energy Zone in Gujarat to Nagpur in Maharashtra, forming a vital part of India’s 500GW renewable energy evacuation and transmission plan.

Collaboration and Innovation

BHEL, in collaboration with Hitachi Energy India Limited, will execute this pioneering project. It is the first HVDC project in India tendered through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process, marking a major milestone in the evolution of the country’s transmission infrastructure.

Strategic Importance

The Khavda-Nagpur HVDC project is pivotal for several reasons:

  • Enhancing Renewable Integration: The project is a major step toward integrating renewable energy into India’s national grid, addressing the growing energy demand sustainably.
  • Innovative Infrastructure: Utilizing advanced HVDC technology ensures efficient, long-distance power transmission with minimal losses.
  • National Goals Alignment: The project aligns with India’s commitment to achieving 500GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Execution Timeline

BHEL has committed to executing the project by 2029, a timeline that underscores the urgency of bolstering renewable energy transmission.

Key Compliance and Transparency

  • Domestic Competitive Bidding: The contract was secured through a fair, transparent, and competitive bidding process, underscoring BHEL’s expertise in securing high-stakes projects.
  • Independent Collaboration: Neither BHEL’s promoter group nor any associated companies hold an interest in PGCIL, ensuring full compliance with corporate governance standards.
  • Unrelated Party Transaction: The project does not fall under related party transactions, reinforcing its transparency.

Future Implications for BHEL

Winning this contract reinforces BHEL’s standing as a leader in India’s energy sector, particularly in the transition toward renewable energy. The project’s scale and complexity provide BHEL with an opportunity to showcase its engineering and project management capabilities on a global scale.

This contract also reflects the growing recognition of BHEL’s role in modernizing India’s power infrastructure, paving the way for new opportunities in HVDC and other advanced transmission technologies.

The Khavda-Nagpur HVDC project is more than just a contract win for BHEL—it’s a step toward realizing India’s renewable energy aspirations. As the nation moves closer to achieving its ambitious climate goals, projects like this will remain central to the energy transformation journey.
