Aditya Birla Capital Enters Gold Loan Business; Targets 1,000 Branches in Three Years

Mumbai, August 20, 2026: Aditya Birla Capital Limited (ABCL) has announced its entry into the Gold Loan business, marking a strategic expansion of its secured lending portfolio. The company plans to build a significant pan-India presence in the gold financing segment, with an ambitious target of around 1,000 dedicated gold loan branches over the next three years.

The new offering will complement ABCL’s existing retail and MSME lending businesses and provide customers with a collateral-backed credit option designed around transparency, convenience and flexibility.

200-300 Gold Loan Branches Planned by March 2027

As part of its initial expansion strategy, the NBFC business of Aditya Birla Capital plans to establish 200-300 dedicated Gold Loan branches by March 2027 across high-potential markets.

The company aims to scale this network to approximately 1,000 Gold Loan branches over the next three years. The phased rollout is expected to help ABCL build a strong presence in both urban and semi-urban markets.

The expansion will combine physical branch infrastructure with digital capabilities, allowing customers to access gold loan services through an integrated omnichannel model.

Focus on Trust, Transparency and Faster Disbursal

ABCL said its Gold Loan offering will be built around three key priorities — trust, transparency and convenience.

Customers will receive branch-led services supported by digital capabilities, with the company focusing on transparent pricing, secure handling of pledged gold and swift loan disbursals.

The business will cater to both existing customers within the Aditya Birla Capital ecosystem and new customers. The company intends to leverage its distribution network and digital platforms to expand access to gold-backed credit.

Management Commentary

Rakesh Singh, Executive Director and CEO – NBFC, Aditya Birla Capital Limited, said the entry into gold loans represents a natural extension of the company’s secured lending strategy.

According to the management, gold loans are experiencing strong structural growth in India, while customer trust remains particularly important because the product involves customers pledging valuable assets.

ABCL plans to build the business with an emphasis on governance, prudent risk management, operational excellence and customer-centric service. The company also intends to use its existing distribution capabilities and digital infrastructure to improve customer experience as it expands across India.

Gold Loans to Strengthen Secured Lending Portfolio

The entry into gold loans gives ABCL another avenue to diversify its secured lending portfolio. Gold-backed lending can serve customers looking for relatively quick access to credit against an existing asset.

The company plans to serve customers across urban and semi-urban markets, potentially expanding its reach beyond its existing customer base.

The strategy also allows ABCL to leverage its established financial-services ecosystem while developing a dedicated gold loan franchise.

Strong Growth in NBFC Business

ABCL’s NBFC business has reported strong growth in recent periods.

During FY26, NBFC Assets Under Management (AUM) increased 27% year-on-year to ₹1,59,916 crore. Retail and SME segments accounted for approximately 68% of AUM.

Disbursements during FY26 increased 25% to ₹84,204 crore, while profit before tax grew 20% to ₹4,023 crore.

The growth momentum continued in Q1 FY27. NBFC AUM rose 28% year-on-year to ₹1,67,456 crore, while disbursements increased 34% to ₹21,201 crore. Profit before tax grew 32% to ₹1,222 crore.

The strong growth in the existing lending franchise provides a broader platform for ABCL as it enters the gold loan market.

Aditya Birla Capital’s Wider Financial Services Platform

Aditya Birla Capital is a listed systemically important Upper Layer Non-Deposit Taking NBFC and the holding company for the group’s financial services businesses.

Its businesses span loans, investments, insurance and payments, serving customers across different stages of their financial lifecycle.

As of June 30, 2026, ABCL’s businesses had more than 66,500 employees, over 1,759 branches and more than 2 lakh agents and channel partners, along with several banking partnerships.

The company reported aggregate assets under management of approximately ₹7.53 lakh crore, while its consolidated lending book crossed ₹2.19 lakh crore as of June 30, 2026.

What the Gold Loan Expansion Means for ABCL

The launch marks an important step in ABCL’s strategy to expand its secured retail lending portfolio. The planned rollout of up to 300 branches by March 2027, followed by a target of around 1,000 branches over three years, indicates that the company sees significant long-term potential in India’s gold loan market.

For ABCL, the opportunity lies in combining its established financial-services brand, distribution network, digital capabilities and risk-management framework with a new secured lending product.

The success of the initiative will depend on disciplined branch expansion, credit quality, customer acquisition, operational execution and the company’s ability to build trust in a highly competitive gold loan market.
