SJVN Achieves COD of 75 MW Jamui Solar Power Project in Bihar

SJVN Limited has successfully achieved the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of its 75 MW Jamui Solar Power Project in Bihar, marking another important milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion strategy.

The project has been developed through SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. Located in the Jamui district of Bihar, the solar project is expected to strengthen SJVN’s presence in India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector.

75 MW Jamui Solar Project Becomes Operational

SJVN announced that the 75 MW Jamui Solar Power Project has successfully achieved its Commercial Operation Date.

The project has been developed near Village Hadhadiya, Kakanchaur, in Jamui District, Bihar, across approximately 300 acres of outright-purchased land.

The estimated project cost is around ₹342 crore.

The project was developed pursuant to a tender floated by the Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency (BREDA), Government of Bihar.

Project Expected to Generate 90 Million Units in First Year

According to SJVN, the Jamui solar project is expected to generate approximately 90 million units of electricity during its first year of operation.

Over its expected operating period of 25 years, the project is estimated to generate approximately 3,522 million units of electricity cumulatively.

The electricity generated from the project will be supplied to the State of Bihar.

The tariff has been fixed at ₹2.96 per unit, which SJVN said will help facilitate the availability of affordable and clean green power to consumers.

The competitive tariff is also expected to support the state’s renewable energy requirements while contributing to the broader transition toward cleaner electricity generation.

Renewable Energy Expansion Remains a Key Focus

The commissioning of the Jamui project represents another step in SJVN’s strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio.

The company has been increasing its focus on solar and other renewable energy projects as India accelerates its transition toward cleaner sources of electricity.

The 75 MW project adds further renewable generation capacity to SJVN’s portfolio and strengthens the company’s position as it seeks to expand its presence in the renewable energy sector.

Project to Support India’s 500 GW Renewable Energy Target

The commissioning of the Jamui Solar Power Project also contributes to India’s broader renewable energy ambitions.

The Government of India has set a target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

SJVN stated that the Jamui project will contribute toward this national objective by supplying clean electricity to the grid.

The project is also estimated to reduce approximately 82,250.74 tonnes of carbon emissions, supporting India’s decarbonisation efforts and climate commitments.

Employment and Local Economic Benefits

Apart from generating renewable electricity, the project has also contributed to employment generation and local economic development in the Jamui region.

SJVN estimates that the project has created approximately:

  • 15–20 direct employment opportunities
  • 50–100 indirect employment opportunities

The company said these employment opportunities will contribute to the development of green jobs and provide an economic boost to the surrounding community.

SJVN Green Energy Strengthens Renewable Portfolio

The project has been executed through SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN.

The successful commissioning of the Jamui project reinforces SGEL’s focus on developing renewable energy projects across India.

For SJVN, the project is part of its broader ambition to transform itself into a leading renewable energy company while expanding its clean energy generation capacity.

What the Jamui Project Means for SJVN

The commissioning of the 75 MW solar project is strategically important for SJVN for several reasons.

First, it expands the company’s renewable energy footprint. Solar power is expected to play an increasingly important role in India’s future electricity mix.

Second, the project provides a long-term generation opportunity. With an estimated cumulative generation of 3,522 million units over 25 years, the project adds a long-duration renewable asset to SJVN’s portfolio.

Third, the ₹2.96 per unit tariff provides visibility on the project’s revenue generation framework. The supply of electricity to Bihar also strengthens SJVN’s participation in the state’s clean energy transition.

Finally, the project supports SJVN’s diversification beyond conventional hydropower, as the company continues to build a broader renewable energy portfolio.

SJVN’s Renewable Energy Journey Continues

The achievement of COD for the 75 MW Jamui Solar Power Project marks another milestone in SJVN’s renewable energy journey.

With an estimated first-year generation of 90 million units, a 25-year cumulative generation potential of around 3,522 million units, and projected carbon emission reduction of more than 82,000 tonnes, the project is expected to contribute to Bihar’s clean energy supply while supporting India’s renewable energy objectives.

For investors, the development highlights SJVN’s continued focus on expanding its renewable energy portfolio and increasing its participation in India’s long-term clean energy transition.
