SAIL Discusses Q1 FY27 Performance, Planned Maintenance, and Demand Outlook
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has released the transcript of its Q1 FY27 earnings conference call, outlining the company’s operational performance, industry outlook, and ongoing capital investment strategy. During the call, Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Ashok Panda highlighted the impact of planned maintenance shutdowns, resilient domestic steel demand, and the company’s focus on improving production efficiency in the coming quarters.
Planned Maintenance to Strengthen Long-Term Capacity
During the first quarter of FY27, SAIL carried out scheduled capital repairs and maintenance at several of its major integrated steel plants. These shutdowns were intentionally planned at the beginning of the financial year to improve plant reliability, operational efficiency, and production capacity for the remaining quarters.
Key operational highlights for Q1 FY27 include:
- Crude Steel Production: 4.8 million tonnes (MT), marginally lower than 4.9 MT in Q1 FY26 due to planned maintenance shutdowns.
- Sales Volume: Approximately 4.2 MT, reflecting a year-on-year decline of around 7–8%.
- Inventory: Finished steel inventory increased by nearly 0.2 MT during the quarter, with the company planning to gradually liquidate the excess inventory over the rest of FY27.
Industry Environment Remains Supportive
Management noted that the global steel industry continued to face challenges arising from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which disrupted supply chains for key raw materials such as limestone and propane. Rising fuel costs and inflationary pressures also weighed on global steel markets.
Despite these external headwinds, India’s steel sector continued to demonstrate healthy demand supported by infrastructure development and construction activity.
Industry trends highlighted during the conference call include:
- Domestic Steel Consumption: Increased by more than 8% year-on-year during Q1 FY27.
- Domestic Steel Production: Grew by approximately 3% compared with the previous year.
- Net Steel Imports: Rose to around 0.4–0.5 MT during the quarter, up from approximately 0.3 MT in Q1 FY26.
Focus on Higher Production and Inventory Reduction
Following the completion of major maintenance activities, SAIL expects stronger operational performance in the coming quarters. The company plans to improve capacity utilization, reduce finished goods inventory, increase sales volumes, and capitalize on improved plant efficiencies to support profitability through the remainder of FY27.
Management remains optimistic that robust domestic steel demand, combined with enhanced production capabilities after scheduled maintenance, will position the company for improved financial and operational performance in the upcoming quarters.
