Adani Energy Solutions Wins ₹4,700 Crore Maharashtra Transmission Project for 4,500 MW Renewable Energy

Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has secured a major transmission project in Maharashtra with an estimated capital expenditure of approximately ₹4,700 crore. The project will support the evacuation of up to 4,500 MW of renewable and pumped storage power and further strengthen the company’s transmission order book.

The project was awarded through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process, where AESL emerged as the lowest bidder. The project is designed to strengthen power transmission between the Western and Southern regions while supporting the growing renewable energy and pumped storage ecosystem around Satara, Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

₹4,700 Crore Transmission Project in Maharashtra

The project, named “Network Expansion Scheme in Western Region to Cater to Pumped Storage Potential near Satara (up to 4500 MW) – Part A,” will be implemented through the special purpose vehicle Satara Power Transmission Ltd.

AESL plans to complete the project within 36 months. The project will add significant transmission infrastructure to the company’s portfolio, including 562 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity.

The project is expected to play an important role in evacuating renewable energy generated in Karnataka to major load centres in Maharashtra while also supporting pumped storage projects in the region.

AESL Transmission Order Book Rises to Around ₹85,000 Crore

The latest project strengthens AESL’s already significant transmission pipeline. Following the win, the company’s transmission order book stands at approximately ₹85,000 crore.

The project also increases AESL’s cumulative transmission network to 29,739 ckm, while its total transformation capacity reaches approximately 1,43,425 MVA.

The growing order book provides visibility for AESL’s transmission business as India expands its power grid to accommodate rising renewable energy capacity.

Key Transmission Infrastructure Under the Project

The Maharashtra project includes several major transmission assets designed to improve grid connectivity and renewable energy evacuation.

Key components include:

  • A 765/400 kV substation at Satara
  • Kolhapur-Satara 765 kV double-circuit transmission line
  • Augmentation of the Kolhapur pooling station
  • Associated transmission infrastructure
  • 562 ckm of new transmission lines
  • 9,000 MVA of additional transformation capacity

Together, these assets are expected to strengthen the transmission backbone between renewable energy generation zones and major electricity consumption centres.

Project to Support 4,500 MW Pumped Storage Potential

A major feature of the project is its ability to support up to 4.5 GW of pumped storage potential near Satara.

Pumped storage is increasingly important for India’s renewable energy transition because it can provide energy storage and grid flexibility when solar and wind generation fluctuate.

The new transmission infrastructure is therefore expected to support both renewable energy evacuation and energy storage deployment, helping improve the reliability of power flows between southern and western India.

Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions, said pumped storage projects are becoming an important part of India’s clean energy transition because they provide the flexibility and reliability required to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the electricity grid.

According to the company, the Satara transmission project will create an important transmission backbone for renewable energy evacuation and energy storage deployment while strengthening power flows between Southern and Western India.

AESL also reiterated its focus on developing future-ready transmission infrastructure to support renewable energy growth, improve grid stability and contribute to India’s long-term decarbonisation objectives.

Transmission Infrastructure Critical for India’s Renewable Energy Growth

India’s rapid expansion of solar, wind and other non-fossil energy capacity is increasing the requirement for high-capacity transmission infrastructure.

The government has set a target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. Connecting renewable energy generation clusters with industrial and urban consumption centres will require substantial investment in transmission networks.

AESL is positioning its transmission business to benefit from this structural opportunity by developing transmission systems connecting renewable energy-rich regions with major load centres.

AESL Continues to Expand Its Energy Infrastructure Portfolio

Adani Energy Solutions operates across multiple areas of the energy sector, including power transmission, electricity distribution, smart metering and cooling solutions.

The company is India’s largest private-sector transmission company, with a cumulative transmission network of 29,739 ckm and a transformation capacity of 1,43,425 MVA, according to its announcement.

In its retail electricity distribution business, AESL serves approximately 13 million consumers across metropolitan Mumbai and the industrial hub of Mundra SEZ.

The company is also expanding its smart metering operations and aims to become a leading smart metering integrator in India.

What the ₹4,700 Crore Order Means for AESL

The Maharashtra transmission project is strategically important for AESL, as it combines three major growth themes: renewable energy evacuation, pumped storage, and the expansion of India’s transmission grid.

The addition of 562 ckm of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity strengthens AESL’s infrastructure portfolio, while the approximately ₹85,000 crore transmission order book provides substantial business visibility.

With renewable energy capacity continuing to expand, projects connecting generation centres with major demand hubs are expected to remain an important part of India’s power infrastructure investment cycle.
