Biocon Fuels Malaysian Diabetes Care with Partner Duopharma’s MYR 225 Million Insulin Tender Wins

Biocon Limited is reinforcing its pivotal role in Malaysia’s diabetes care landscape, as its long-standing partner, Duopharma Biotech Berhad, has successfully secured substantial insulin tenders from the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MoH). This strategic triumph, valued at **over MYR 225 million** this year, sees Biocon’s Malaysian subsidiary, Biocon Sdn. Bhd., supplying crucial insulin therapies, underscoring a decade of unwavering commitment to affordable healthcare in the region.

These significant agreements are set to ensure consistent access to high-quality, cost-effective medications for the estimated 4.75 million Malaysians living with diabetes. The breakdown of the secured contracts includes:

  • Human Insulin: A three-year agreement valued at approximately **MYR 155.27 million**.
  • Insulin Glargine: A two-year agreement worth approximately **MYR 18 million**.
  • Insulin Aspart: A two-year agreement valued at approximately **MYR 52.5 million**.

This initiative not only strengthens the local pharmaceutical supply chain but also aligns with national development plans like the 13th Malaysia Plan and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, emphasizing local resilience and healthcare self-reliance.

Shreehas Tambe, CEO & Managing Director of Biocon Limited, highlighted Malaysia’s centrality to Biocon’s insulin journey, anchored by its state-of-the-art, integrated manufacturing facility in Johor – the largest in Asia. This facility, representing over USD 600 million in foreign direct investment since 2011, enables scaled delivery of insulin not just within Malaysia but globally. “Our Johor operations enable us to deliver insulin at scale, expanding patient access in Malaysia and around the world,” Tambe stated.

The enduring partnership with Duopharma Biotech, which commenced in 2016, has already supplied over 120 million insulin cartridges to MoH facilities, supporting more than 450,000 patients. Beyond diabetes, this robust collaboration has successfully expanded into oncology and ophthalmology biologics, further improving access to critical therapies across Malaysia. This latest tender success solidifies Biocon and Duopharma’s shared mission to enhance patient outcomes and secure medicine supply for the nation.
