Shyam Metalics Commissions 8.90 MW Captive Solar Power Project at West Bengal Plant

Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Shyam SEL and Power Limited, has successfully commissioned an 8.90 MW captive solar power plant at its manufacturing facility in Sambalpur, West Bengal. The project marks another milestone in the company’s sustainability journey and reinforces its commitment to integrating renewable energy into its manufacturing operations.

The captive solar project is expected to reduce energy costs, improve operational efficiency, and lower the company’s carbon footprint while supporting its long-term clean energy strategy.

Key Highlights of the Solar Power Project

  • Total Installed Capacity: 8.90 MW.
  • CAPEX Model: 4.60 MW developed under the capital expenditure model.
  • OPEX Model: 4.30 MW developed under the operational expenditure model.
  • Location: Manufacturing facility at Sambalpur, West Bengal.
  • Purpose: To meet captive power requirements, reduce electricity costs, and enhance the use of renewable energy.

Blended Investment Strategy

The solar project has been developed using a balanced mix of CAPEX and OPEX models, enabling the company to optimize capital allocation while securing long-term savings on energy costs. The hybrid approach also provides greater financial flexibility and supports the company’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.

Management Commentary

Commenting on the commissioning, Brij Bhushan Agarwal said the project reflects the group’s continued commitment to sustainable manufacturing and operational excellence. He added that expanding renewable energy capacity will help optimize production costs while significantly reducing carbon emissions across the company’s operations.

Strengthening Green Manufacturing

Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited is one of India’s leading integrated metal producers, with an installed metal production capacity of 16.93 MTPA across the steel value chain, supported by 467 MW of captive power generation capacity.

The addition of the 8.90 MW captive solar plant further strengthens the company’s renewable energy portfolio and aligns with its strategy to increase the use of clean energy across its manufacturing facilities in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, supporting both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability goals.
